I've never worked with an airbrush, it does seem to blend things quite a bit. Seems you could dry brush some highlights and details pretty quickly though to make things stand out a bit. I personally like using unexpected colors. Like how when you look at a person's arm you can see the blue/green/purple of veins, some spots look more pink/orange while other spots look more yellow/white.

This concept is so freaking rad!! I will say if you're looking for otherworldly colors for paints I suggest Folk Art's "flash" colors. They're color shifting, and when painted over black they have a really neat shimmer effect that works fantastic for creatures like this that need a magical, outer-space-y touch.

Damnnnnn that looks nice!!!! Your approach with the priming and airbrushing was just right. For creatures you can absolutely 'zenithal' the top of the model and the ventral area of the creature to bring out the lighting situation and the natural coloration of the beast. Vinnie V. taught me that one.

You did a great job with this, and once more I think you undervalued your ability as a painter. I'm going to throw out a few thoughts here: 1) I think the choice of using Sculptamold was the right way to go; it really conveys the feeling that this thing is ripping and tearing its way into the Prime Material Plane. The addition of it in the mouth helped cement this idea even more, as if it were literally chewing its way through. 2) As I was watching you assemble the wall pieces, I had the thought that beveling the smaller pentagons might have added a further dimension of alien otherworldliness, the non-Euclidean geometry so often mentioned in Lovecraft stories. 3) If there is a flaw with zenithal highlighting, its that it doesn't really favor a paint scheme that's lighter on the bottom than on the top but I think your work-around did a good job of solving that problems, so kudos for the quick thinking on your part. 4) I have found a new favorite word; eye-bulbous. I must now find occasions to use it. [insert Mr Burns laugh here]

' As the slimy cold tentacles wrapped me, in their bone crunching grip, I knew I was doomed to leave this eldritch realm in its slavering maw!' That's a great repurposing Jeremy. A terrifying creature of 'lovecraftian' proportions. During the paint job, I wondered how it would look if its colour was drained to a white theme, like the grand-pappy of all maggot monsters - another build perhaps?
@zoogoo404
@zoogoo404 4 жыл бұрын
For the painting step; since I do a lotta painting; an easy way to pull out more of your details in the sculpy and the toy would have been a quick wash. Washing over warm colours with brown adds a lot to the overall effect, and to really sell the otherworldly effect, hard contrast colours would work really nicely; (Lime greens in the eyes, for example.), drybrush with another colour like orange would have done wonders. Also picking out details, like adding pupils (Easy cheat way for larger things is just to use a fine mapping pen.), and the teeth, dots on the underside of the tentacles ect would all help the model stick out more against the base. Since you have an airbrush you could also also turn the pressure on really low and 'speckle' the creature to get a spotty effect. Either way the use of materials and relative simplicity of the build is awesome.

It turned out great, man! I was worried for you when you melted the foam, but you covered it well! Your idea of having an 'inert' portal is genius, it's gonna seriously help with the surprise factor. I gotta say though, it's a seriously freaky coincidence that in the same week you made your custom Eldritch mini, I chose to paint Cthulhu. Even creepier, I also went with a red-to-purple gradient, and mixed some varnish in with my blackwash to give him the 'wet' texture. I like to think we were psychically influenced by the same cosmic entity. I guess the stars were right, this week. Lol

We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

Great execution throughout! You absolutely nailed the paintjob, Vallejo Squid Pink works well with alien and otherworldly monsters :) my go-to as well. Neat trick with the UV resin, definitely going to look into that. Another material I've used for mini "drool" is the cheapest arts & crafts glue (elmer's, UHU, anything cheap works), just add paint, let it sit until it becomes sticky (some 10 to 15mins), and toothpick it wherever you like. Finish with gloss varnish to set it better.

A few of those tentacle can hold a mini pretty well, for a grapple/constriction attack. I don't know what it would do to your paint job, but it's a fun visual.

I thought melting the stone(foam)-portal with heat or spraypaint would have looked really cool - like it's not a spell opening a portal but reality itself is melting like ice, giving way to the eldritch horror from beyond. (I'm no expert, but i guess that the melting-procress is rather difficult to controll.)

I used this toy last year for a D&D Boss Fight between two worlds ... using the toys mouth as an (unwillingly) transfer to another plane. Great creepy and impressive floorplan encounter. And it is cheap to get.

Very cool. Reminds me a little bit of the monster from Tremors, the head coming up out of the ground. Nicely done. I like when you share your creative thought process throughout and encouraging people to try. I'm planning on making a not so mini set of the stones from "5th Element"

Came across this video today. Don't know if you're into Star Wars but you using that Rathtar as the base has weirdly inspired me to make a custom action figure of Abeloth, who's sort of an Eldritch Horror in her own right. Bought a 3ft tall Rapunzel doll that's posable and those detachable tentacles will be perfect for the fingers. Thanks for the idea and great video!

Looks really cool and I like how it's not just a thing coming through a portal. It looks like it's braking reality and as if the wall is warping and becoming the creature. Although I think the eye things would look better with a different colour maybe a deep metallic blue or purple

i liked it. i used to make terrain a long time ago. the only suggestions i would make is to paint the runes a greenish color on the base with the monster and maybe paint the eyes green to match or paint as pustules, maybe yellow with red veining

I'm not sure of the composition of sculptamold, but over hydrating plaster of paris lengthens cure time. You can add a pour of salt to accelerate cure time with plaster as well, I've had it work from a consistency of pancake batter to rock hard in five minutes with careful mixing.

Yeah! I think a group of Investigators or D&D caracters would become totally crazy if they should encounter some of this Great Ancient or eldritch horror. Actually, I feel that it's the begining of a new collection for Call of Cthulhu parties, with the misterious wooden house...isn't it? Oh, maybe it's an idea to build a second "Black Magic room" or maybe a "Dark Magic room"... In all cases, nice work. And very rapidly done.

I'd suggest washing the model in something like Citadel Druchii Violet, but avoiding the blood areas. That will help all the details on the tentacles pop out

If you'd set aside a couple of tentacles, you could have done a multi-stage appearance. If you added pins/pegs to the tentacle bases, and built matching innocuous holes into the "empty" portal pattern, you could insert the tentacles mid-game instead of going straight to the full creature. You could take that idea further, letting the players fight back the emerging tentacles for a bit, or using the emerging tentacles as an even finer timer by adding them one at a time.

This idea is perfect for the Great Unbeheld, which is the eldritch horror BBEG of my current campaign. I just bought the figure (shipping was more expensive than the mini) and I'll get to work on something different, but still (hopefully) horrifying and awesome!
