Our group built a table like that around ten years ago, using the Popeye village in Malta as inspiration. It wasn't anything like as awesome as the stuff Jeremy makes, but it looked pretty good and was made almost entirely from cardboard. Over the years it got used in all sorts of games from D&D, Warhammer Fantasy, Mordheim etc but it deteriorated pretty badly and only a few bits still survive, but this video is inspiring me to maybe remake it using better materials and techniques. Awesome work, as always, Mr Jeremy! Between this and Wyloch's recent Beholder video, I'm going to be really busy I think :)

What a beautiful craft! Really really cool. Tons of uses. Thanks for your video and thank the lady for the idea. Just an idea for the first part. Maybe use chipboard to make a two piece hull attached to a keel part in the center. Then you can glue paper strips or thin foam strips to look like the planks of the hull. That will save you the hustle of measuring and making the internal ribs to give strength to the building.

Great job, Jeremy! This is a really cool design that exudes character and really helps set a neat tone. Makes me think of "the walrus and the carpenter." As for the windows, maybe try making the frames look like wrought iron or blued steel to compliment and contrast the interior lighting colors.
@arnequedens3665 жыл бұрын
Maybe you can do the lighting a little bit different. A little bit Brown in the Top edges
@stephenmartin19825 жыл бұрын
That was astounding. Also for the light in the window a trick I've found helpful is having one point as the origin of the light an off white and go to yellows, orange and a red/brown in progressively darker shades as you move away from the light source. Do some blending starting at the lightest color and drag lightly into the darker colors with a soft dry brush.

@BlackMagicCraftOfficial5 жыл бұрын
Arguing 3D printing vs hand crafted is like arguing photography vs painting. Utterly pointless. They are both art forms, what matters is the artist using them. That being said 3D printing someone else’s art basically amounts to printing a photo of someone’s painting. Mad respect for those that design the files or those that mix them with their own craft.....but only printing others work? To me that is sad and utilitarian. Not for me.
@FrankyDCrafter5 жыл бұрын
Black Magic Craft that’s exactly how I view it. The other way I look at it is by giving the respect to those dms that take the time to craft but still be able to give respect to those dms that care enough about their player experience to give them something nice to look at ( no matter if it was printed or crafted) people should get less caught up with which table dressing style is better and just have fun playing the game.

This is freaking amazing!! A suggestvfor the windows that you paint the frames a darker brown so that the yellow behind them stands out more, paint them a shade darker than the rest of the piece. But OMG it's amazing. Reminds of a house that this group from WoW would live in. I can't remember what they're called but they're like walruses and are 🎣 type species of course.

A late thought on the colors of the window: How about adding a gradient from black to orange? Also colouring the topwindow darker, to simulate the light of a weak candle that is farer away from the top window than the bottom one. It looks awesome though as is. Its feels so full of life and story

I've been researching uv resin recently because I am thinking of taking it up as a hobby. There are pigments both powdered and liquid that you can use to color the resin itself. Exceptional weathering/aging effects on the planking of the hull, you've outdone yourself!
@SlyBlu75 жыл бұрын
As someone who builds scale model ships for fun - you had the right idea with the keel and ribs. You're right about not having much surface area - it's something that a lot of newby ship makers forget; you should have beveled the ribs to follow the curve of the decking above. This gives you more surface area, and also makes sure that you're not bending the planking over a sharp corner. If you're not gonna use real wood, I would have used plasticard, aka polystyrene sheet. Not sure if you've ever used that material in the past, and I know it can be a little spendy, but it would really help you out. You can bend it around angles like the hull of your ship, but it's also rigid enough to not droop like the foam under your porch. You can buy it in different thicknesses, from paper thin (but still rigid) up to the thickness of your chipboard. It also comes in various dowels, strips, pre-stamped patterns like cobblestone, and so on. You can glue it with plastic glue, which creates a chemical weld between the layers and it will never come apart. It's also safe for spraypaint and doesn't dissolve like foam. Seriously man, you should check it out. Evergreen is the best, but kinda on the pricier side. There are some bad brands and bad qualities out there, so if you're gonna experiment, I'd start with Evergreen to get the "real deal" and then cheap out later.

Looks great! And don't sweat it about the windows. It's incredibly hard to paint realistic light effects. You'd need to use a photo reference to get the fall-off just right behind the window, and paint in light spill and overblown details on the window frame. At that point, it would probably be easier to just use a battery-powered LED with a diffuser in front of it inside the window - Same effect, less work.

@MissGroves5 жыл бұрын
Brilliant way to pull that off. Another way to do this would be to use model ship plans to make templates of hull supports etc (thought of this as my dad used to build model ships from scratch and he has loads of books with templates) if you overlap the planks a little then the gap problem wouldn't be so bad, just like real ships.
@MarcioLiao5 жыл бұрын

Awesome design! With the window lightning, I think what felt "off" was that it was so saturated and uniform. Maybe multiple coats slowly adding white to your paint mixture to desaturate the color. And give it a halo effect of a much lighter coat on the outer edges of the "light" behind the window.

It helps to know that the planks on a ship are not straight. They are steam bent r they use some other method of bending the compound curve before applying to the hull frame. Or they'll use "ship lap" overlapping by appx half the width f the plank in the middle and almost no overlap at the bow t build a base layer so they have a solid surface apply the main planks as they are bent.

So! One trick I've seen regarding windows is to tint the resin (or water effects, or triple thick gloss glaze, or whatever) with an ink. Basically, you add the ink before it dries, swirling it around a little to get uniform coverage of the color. You could also apply it after it dries, if you want more of a smudged/dirty look to it. Or, in your case, if you're working with a quick-dry resin and mixing it in isn't a viable option. This technique is great for stained glass windows, for the record. Something to consider if that ever comes up in a build.

I really like how this turned out, my only small criticism would be that the tusks above the door should be a bit more ivory than gold looking. It would have looked more natural, as well as the light behind the windows. It does not look like light shining through. Maybe if you had put in a low level LED light at the back? I wonder how that would have looked through the acrylic windows?
