I saw a reference to this song in a story I'm reading and never heard of it before. I'm going to have to share it. I like the analogy of 3 ships and the "three" Wise Men who came to see him. Of course the bible doesn't say three but that's the myth and also they didn't see him in a manger. He would have been between 1 and 2 years old by the time they got there. Otherwise Harad wouldn't have ordered the killing of every male child 2 years of age and younger. I really love the style as well because it's lively and uplifting. It reminds me of when I was much younger and lived in California. Three of us and sometimes four would gather on Saturday nights and listen to KUSC and one of the programs was Fiona Richie' Thistle and Shamrock.

The origins of the Christmas carol "I Saw Three Ships" are unclear, but the song's traditional English roots date back to the 17th century. The song's lyrics mention ships sailing into Bethlehem, which is landlocked and far from the coast, so the meaning of the ships is open to interpretation. Some possible explanations include: Relics of the Magi The ships may refer to the three ships that carried the relics of the Biblical Magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Camels of the Magi The ships may refer to the camels that carried the Magi to visit baby Jesus, as camels are sometimes called the "ships of the desert". King Wenceslaus II The ships may refer to the coat of arms of King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia, which featured "Azure three galleys argent". Joseph of Arimathea and the three Marys The ships may refer to Joseph of Arimathea and the three Marys, who sailed to the south of France with the Holy Grail after the Roman oppression of the Holy Land.
@clairee49397 сағат бұрын
I suppose that people in port towns during colonial times would have been used to seeing ships coming in from long journeys from the east bringing exotic cargo. They might not necessarily have known the geography of the holy-land and imagined the Maji travelling east by boat to Bethlehem with their exotic gifts

Three ships can refer to camels as they’re called the ships of the desert. They were probably the mode of transportation used by the Magi

< - - - Wonders why all the singers of this particular song don't GET the fact that it's talking about "CAMELS" instead of sea going vessels (SMH) ???
@Kath-nd6pj3 ай бұрын
Yes the camel is the ‚ship‘ of the desert, but the three kings did not arrive on Christmas Day. But followed the star and arrived 12 or 25days later, the Epiphany. So Jesus and Mary were not onboard. This ancient ditty more likely refering to a symbolic ship of the Christian community navigating the challenges of life. I found this: „ Historical Significance of Ships Ships and the Advent of Christianity Historically, the ship metaphor took on a greater significance as Christianity began to spread. The ship came to symbolize the Church itself, often referred to as the 'Ship of Salvation' or 'Ark of Salvation'. In early Christian iconography and literature, the ship was a symbol of the Church's journey through the turbulent sea of the world, guided by Christ's redemptive presence.“

Expectedly, there's no mention of _Christ_ in their particular version. What's missing?: "And what was in those ships, all three, On Christmas day, on Christmas day; And what was in those ships, all three, On Christmas day in the morning?" "Our Savior, Christ, and His Lady, On Christmas day, on Christmas day, Our Savior, Christ, and His Lady, On Christmas day in the morning." Merry _Christ_ mas. ✝️
