Used to go here once a year for my "Holiday" with my parents (We grew up on a council estate in Salford, Eccles in the 80s) Was a highlight for me as a kid, loved it, don't care what it is now, will always be a place I hold endearment for, no matter how nasty it is.

Charles, a woman killed herself yesterday here in Wilmslow. She threw herself off the bridge on to the A34 bypass. Not that unheard of you might think… but the crazy thing about this, is her husband was with her in the car… she was driving over the bridge, and out of nowhere she pulled the car over, and jumped off into traffic. Can you imagine how he ever gets over witnessing that? I didn’t witness the jump, but I witnessed him crying in distress being comforted by a woman. I live very close by. I say this to you, because I know you’ve been to Wilmslow quite recently. And we really need to do something about mental health crisis. And what the crisis is: is people who are a little bit sad, and think they are entitled to happiness, when they don’t have it, the tell everyone they have MH issues, and take up valuable resources. So people like this woman, clearly with REAL mental health issues, have to wait 8 weeks to see a mental health professional! That is what the crisis is. And I hope you will try and bring awareness to this issue Sir Charles!

My first experience of Blackpool was a very rainy summer day trip in 1974. So excited as the Dr Who exhibition had recently opened earlier that year. To come face to face with the monsters and Daleks you had been terrified by on tv was both fascinating and darn scary. You could walk into the pleasure beach free and pay per ride which was pence. The funhouse was fantastic albeit the scary laughing clown. The song "Beach Baby" was in the charts then and always reminds me of this visit whenever I hear it, which of course is rare now. It was much more a family resort back then with lots of elderly folk who came out of the war dressed in flat caps, raincoats, headscarves' and tweed jackets. Last time I went was 1994 and it had already got pretty seedy by then. I might drive up again this year and document it for old times sake.

I'm sorry....that's nonsense. In the early 1990s when I lived there, it claimed to have 17m visitors but even that was considered optimistic by residents. There re no cowds there anymore. Those days have gone. The town has become an embarassment. Tragic.

@@uk-martin4905 maybe you need to see it for yourself. This weekend it was heaving despite the not so good weather. The pubs were full, town car parks full and hundreds of people arriving at Blackpool North station when I left. They’re hosting the UK coach rally this weekend with over 50 coaches lined up on the front by the tower. Just one of many events.

It's a real shame to see the decline. 40 years ago, I'd go there as a kid and it still had plenty of life in it but as you say, cheap package holidays have taken away it's core economy, which was leisure and holidays. Now it serves mostly hen parties and stag nights and it's really hard for a lot of smaller hotels to make ends meet. Lot's of genuine poverty and social issues there which doesn't help, but that is pretty much the same in a lot of Northern towns and cities, long forgotten and abandoned by government policy and investment. Blaming decline on drug addicts is daft though. There has been a complete failure to properly resource specialist treatment for people who faill into that abyss, along with a failure to deal with the criminal gangs supplying them, and that problem exists in a lot of places. Blaming councils, who have lost 60% of central government funding under the Tories over the last 14 years is also disingenuous. Councils are legally required to provide certain services, which includes adult social care, a cost that is forcing most councils to borrow to pay for it. Most councils have had to cut youth provision completely because of those cuts, as all available funding is needed for those legally required services. Only a change of government prepared to properly fund what is needed to tackle these issues will change anything, and that will never be the Tories or right wing libertarians, who think food banks are great.

Was in Blackpool on Friday was shocked at the slum like conditions that was clearly evident through the town, it seems Blackpool has been abandoned to the slum landlord/ hoteliers, even on the golden mile it looked grubby and uncared for ! Surely the town council has a lot to answer for these authorities cannot keep harping back to the pandemic for an excuse to do nothing, Blackpool for years has been a favourite destination of ours Now just like a lot of the hotels is seems to be a uncared for crumbling botched up dump so so sad Blackpool Authorities hang your heads in shame !!!

We went in December for an extended family weekend, after insistence from a 50 yr old daughter who loved it when she was last there as a 9 year old. The "holiday villa" we booked turned out to be an HMO that had lost its certificate. It was filthy, holes in walls, broken furniture, smashed doors, disgusting kitchen, with week-old hash browns still under the grill! The rest of Blackpool was to the same standard. Even the sea is officially unfit to bathe due to sewage. The worse thing is that it is NOT cheap. Over-pricing on everything including parking. A hateful ruin of a town.
