Best way to paint furniture black. This #furnitureflip is fool proof and beginner friendly making it my current recommendation for anyone attempting to paint furniture black
**this paint has pros and cons like any other, the pros are that it adheres really well w/o sanding and that it has a super rock hard smooth level finish ✨ BUT it can take up to 30 days to cure. I feel that is where many beginner mishaps could happen so be careful with it the first month after painting it and give it time to become nice and strong for you 👏❤️ i recommend not moving it even until after a few days bc it is very vulnerable at first.
Products used
Valspar oil Infused - Waterborne furniture and cabinet enamel In color - Caviar
Varathane water based polyurethane- Matte finish
Walmart 2.5 inch angled brush
Walmart - high density foam rollers (pack of 3)
Walmart roller handle
400 grit sanding sponge
Dish soap to clean piece and brushes

Loving this oil enriched enamel for black finishes 👏 and the Walmart brush and roller did the job! I still prefer whiz brand cabinets and doors white foam rollers and zibra brushes but hey not bad for the prices!

I used hat technique when I first started using chalk pain. Love that it allows the wood to breath but not the rough surface. Because it’s so thick, I would apply the first coat with a foam roller and the paint thinned down a little. That lays on an even coat - which is hard for beginners. Then I brush it. After it dries really, really well, then I sand with a 400 or higher grit in between coats. Lots of work but you get a baby bottom smooth finish that. It very durable.

I tested this method with chalkpaint and varnished water-based paint . My color white and navy blue. It's great work. İf you don't have it, do not apply too much paint, do not waste it and one more tips: if the room/weather is hot, quickly paint / quickly roll it . 👌 I love this method 😍 I am thankful to you Shannon 🙏

Another awesome job Shannon! I've been doing the first coat with extra primer the second coat with just the black paint and the third coat with half and half paint and Varathane top coat. I just listed two black pieces this weekend. They're sprayed and wow they came out absolutely perfect. I just stand in the garage and stare at them in amazement. So smooth! Also mixing with matte to bring down the sheen of a satin or semi-gloss paint I may pick up. I found an entire gallon of a miss-tint valspar cabinet paint in a very pretty sage for 9 bucks. Yay! It is a semi-gloss though so the equal parts varathane matte water-based polyurethane works out well I'm up here in Charlotte not too far! Have a great week!

it looked beautiful before. I mean I wonder how many folks do research before they paint furniture? I mean some furniture OK paint it.. 1970s pieces ESPECIALLY.. but really be careful before you slap a coat of paint on an old piece of furniture. You can destroy the original finish and it's value. KNOW what you have before you paint!.

This is perfect timing for me. I am painting my mother’s old dresser for my daughter’s baby room. She picked the same paint and color and I have two coats on and I am ready for a light sand and top coat. I’ve been debating how or whether I need a poly top coat, I think I will take your advice and mix with poly. It will never be this smooth because it’s a pine dresser from the 50s with some deep dings and lots of texture and knots in the wood, but I really wanted the top and sides to be as smooth as possible. I think it’s finally dry enough to sand today so I’m going to try it!

New subscriber and new at flipping furniture ❤️ Forgive me if you have already but I was wonder if you could do a video elaborating a bit on the business side of things? You mentioned to talk to local designers and such to get business but as a beginner, what are some tips you would give on how exactly to talk to these people and how to price your time, etc. Also, how do you stay in the know on things like what is in style at the moment. I know research internet but that can be so overwhelming because there is so much information! Anyways, I absolutely love your voice overs and your style. So entertaining and knowledgeable. Big thank you from Texas ❤️

I stick with pottery barn for inspo/trends and I charge designers $35 per hour. I just meet them through ppl or reach out on Instagram and say hi and let them know what you can do and what you charge. A lot of them don’t know what we can do with old furniture so before and after pics go a long way. I sold on Facebook marketplace the first 2 years of biz and did great there too, happy flipping! Dressers sell faster than most other items (I don’t bother with single nightstands or dining chairs, learned that the hard way 😆 )

I am doing a lot of black right now too :-) I am confused though since you said the paint is oil and rich enamel, it seems like it could not be mixed with a water-based top coat and seems like it would not be a soap and water cleanup. So many gems in this video, thanks for all the info! Love how the piece turned out, that soft black is such a great neutral. I especially love the tip on the flooring, never would’ve thought 🤯 to do that! It looks like you still achieved a smooth finish with the Walmart brushes & rollers. Is there a reason you still prefer the other brands?
@blacksheephouse
@blacksheephouse 2 жыл бұрын
I did get a smooth finish, for the brushes they did separate a bit more than higher end brushes which isn’t a big deal bc I rolled after but if I were just brushing would matter more and the rollers were fine but I do notice with the whizz brand I get a slightly smoother finish, very subtle difference but whizz is only .25 more than Walmart roller so I’m gonna stick with whizz for now, although I’m hoping to find a good Amazon roller soon
