Sorry to hear about that. Lead is also one of the most poisonous metals, and is way more worked than Mercury. At least is has been eliminated from many home products, specially paint, but it is a very necessary component for the industry. Also it is dangerous because it tastes like sugar.

@staydput They were not "maddened", but the mercury affected the nerves, causing twitching. Also, just a minor detail, but the process was for making fur felt, not tanning leather. The mercury vapours caused the hairs from the fur (typically beaver) to clump together like dryer lint, which was then formed by hand into felt.

romans put vinegar in lead containers to make it sweet (due to lead(II)acetate formed by reaction of lead and acetic acid), lithium is in fact the most lightest metal and it is not so toxic ....

gravity separation is almost always cheaper and better than mercury use but shaker tables are expensive much more work must be done on making gravity options cheaper and more effective so only a fool would use mercury.
