I still love the video chandler.even though you call it a fail,you still got one forge weld!plus every time you light the forge you learn something.we learn from you as well.keep up the good work!

I think what keeps me coming back to your channel is that you don't hide your failures or dumb ideas. I have the opportunity to learn from your mistakes almost as if they were my own, and its that kind of knowledge that builds expertise.

Chandler, man, sometimes I watch your videos and I'm cringing because what you're about to do, and what I think you should do, and you always do next what I'm hoping you would. Keeping me in suspense the whole time. You're very entertaining, and we're all learning with you. For a self proclaimed idiot you seem to keep swinging that hammer in the right direction. If this sounds like a put down, I apologize. Got tons of respect for you. I'm living my forging dreams through you right now. Some day I'll build me a forge out of mud and slowly improve it, but for now I'm relying on you to keep my dream alive. Keep up the good work!

Years ago I worked for a welding construction company and we used nitrogen as a shield gas when we couldn't contain it. We just let it flow through while welding. Might work for you. Also as an àside, boker knives offered stainless damascus a few years ago, so there must be a feasible way to do it from a production stand point. Most I've spoke since I subscribed

If you put some well fitting round carbon steel in your stainless steel pipe and weld both ends shut, you can forge weld it without flux or anything because no oxygen is getting in there. No need for argon if you grind all surfaces neat and if everything fits gapless. Nice video!
@232fkz7 жыл бұрын
This reminds me of the build on Man at Arms when they did the scissor blade. I think they used a press for that when they forged all the pairs of scissors together. That may be similar to this.

I'm in the process of building a home diy forge and find your videos very interesting. After playing around with some scrap I plan on trying some forge welding pattern steel and I've just had a thought and would like your input. After making a billet it can be difficult to remove the canister, would a s/s canister for a high carbon steel forge weld be an option as it doesn't seem to stick to anything?

hell, it was a damned good try, as well as a (sorta) technical success, lol. that tiny spot weld HAD to have forge welded after all. the right pickle, the right flux, the right inert gas, the right lunar position... could be a whole nother ball game. keep swinging, big guy!

hi chandler im wondering if using mild steel for the cannister would work that might allow you to get more heat through to the stainless without deteriorating the cannister just a thought

Maybe they are coated with another metal and it doesn't forge-weld because of that other material? Seems like you had the good temperature for forge-welding when you hit it with the 4 pounds. :(

im doing my science exame this coming thuesday lol if i recall correctly argon is a noble gaz, it has 18 protons, 18 electrons, 22 neutrons and a total of 3 electrical layers with 8 neutron on its last layer (3rd periode and 8th familly VIIIA**) and in total weights about 40atomic mass (39.95ish) and has a default masse of like 2.9998u
@DktheWelder7 жыл бұрын
Nice try I thought it would work. When you tig weld an outside corner like that only have your tungsten sticking out two or three miller meters. It will weld much cleaner( more argon around the arc)

You should avoid hiring from the side when you do canister Damascus, at least until you know it is welded. It will just force the material apart again

You know with enough heat you would eventually cook out all the chromium and then you would be able to forge weld it together the problem with that is it wouldn't exactly retain the same properties of stainless steel anymore
@edgarderschmied44977 жыл бұрын
Or put some carbon things in the canister, they will hopefully oxydize(?) before the stainless steel, and burn the oxygen.

Sorry for the non-specific suggestion, but: If you need 'steel powder', while you're grinding other projects, think about building a catcher / box that can pick up some of your filings directly as you work on those things. It'll build up over a few months, and when you're ready to do a canister project, you'll already have a pile of 'free' powder saved via work you're already doing ( less the 'fun' of shop vac'ing all of it + all of the work crap off of your floor on any given day ) - build to suit your equipment. :)
