I am sharing the process of hand forging a wall coat hook with a leaf end, using traditional methods of blacksmithing, side draft forge and stone coal.
A piece of metal I used is 12mm round steel bar, approximately 19cm long.
Blacksmithing techniques: drawing, bending, tapering, hot punching, shaping and texturing a leaf and forging a little scroll. To forge these hooks I used a rounding hammer for moving the metal, a heavier hammer for hot punching and cross pein hammer for leaf texturing and shaping.
The tools are: anvil, rounding hammer, cross pein hammer, heavy hammer, blacksmith vise, bending fork, blacksmith's tongs, hot punch, wire brush.. You can use file / rasp for finishing as well. You can forge this clothes hook without a power hammer.
Do experiment with the shape of the leaf as well as its bend to different sides to get a bunch of leaf hooks looking great together being a bit different from one another!
Hope that this video could be helpful for blacksmith enthusiasts as well as for craft loving community or just any person interested in how metal craft is made! If you are inspired to forge such type of wall coat hooks, please let us know about your results!
Summer heat is here at Sun Hills, endless bird singing, almost bright nights and wild flowers in bloom =)
We hope you will find out something new about blacksmithing and enjoy your visit to our small countryside workshop!

Loved the shot of your workplace at the beginning. Loved the shot of a leaf hook in darkness. Laughed at the hand of the shadows. :D :D :D I like that in your videos I can feel your sense of humour. As always, very beautiful work! Everything you do is so well executed. Good job, keep going!

Nice work! One question, where you buy your safety shoes?

Thank you! The boots are just regular safety boots. I just made some leather protection covers for laces as they tend to burn so quickly! Socks and laces are in safety now! 😅

I am having a hard time with my wall hooks getting cracks and breaking off. Any tips? Am i working it to cold? Total beginner
@SunHillForge
@SunHillForge Жыл бұрын
If it is a normal mild steel, sounds like it must be too cold. Try to heat it more frequently and cracking should stop. But breaking off sounds like it is not a mild steel.

@@SunHillForge thanks for the reply I believe it's just mild steel square stock I got at the metal yard. I'm thinking to cold. It took me like an hour to make it haha. Practice is what I need. I have a hard time trying to thin it out to a taper.

@@BRadWilson3 Yes, looks like too cold. Practice makes perfect! Take your time and enjoy the learning ride!
