In this video I take on a more complex but incredibly fun project where I make a tomahawk out of rebar. Making the tomahawk challenged me, but I had lots of fun doing it.
Stay tuned as the projects are going to get better each video.

Typically rebar doesn’t have a lot of carbon in it so it doesn’t make for a hardenable steel. But it still looks like you can make one heck of a good looking blade! Nice work man!

Really like the looks of this tomahawk, next time try to forgeweld some high carbon steel for the edge, It would turn this axe into a great tool

Although rebar is cheap and good enough to be a throwing axe. I dont belive need be high carbon since will be not a "survivor tool"

Very cool! For your next one, make either 1) a tactical tomahawk (RMJ) style, or 2) a Vietnam Tomahawk.

Really nice job, unless it is grade 60 rebar it won't harden very much so like suggested a high carbon bit forged in is a good idea

I must praise the nice work. I see that you had to be particularly persistent with punching a hole in the metal bar for the ax handle. You must have worked hard. But the smile on your face says that you are satisfied with your work. I have only one suggestion. In the future, oil the handle of the ax first, and then install the head, because that way you protect the entire handle. I would also like to praise the fact that you did it with coal, because construction rebar does not have a lot of carbon and belongs to the softer steels, but by working in coal, you managed to add carbon to that piece of mild steel. If nothing else, it goes into the surface layer, which is quite enough considering what tool it is. Good luck and let's see more of your work!

Nice bit of forging there. Turned out beautifully, especially considering the relativity low tech tools. You didn't ask for advice about forging so I wont give any. .....but I would say get yourself a decent respirator and wear it whenever you are grinding or filling anything, wood, metal, whatever. As an old fart I can tell you in 30 years time when you wake up hacking and coughing in the morning you will be glad you did. Even outside you don't want to be breathing in any kind of dust you will be making. Also.. Get yourself some good eye protection + face shield. I wear glasses and more than once have thought "ahh this grind job will take 20 seconds, no point in putting on the shield and glasses" last year I had a chip fly off, go under my glasses and cut me just on the edge of the eyelid. If I had my head raised up just a little more I would have been in for a lot of hurt. And with the PPE police notice done with, once again, nice work.

Thank you for the advice. I'm already looking into buying a face shield and a dust mask. I've tried different ones, that were quite cheap and just they just didn't work for me. I need to find some PPE that doesn't cost too much but is still comfortable to wear and doesn't obstruct my view.

Great job there buddy what size rebar was it? And as many people said Reba don’t have much high carbon I would add something like 1080 1045 or a piece of old broken file in for the bit
@rg_forge__
@rg_forge__ 2 жыл бұрын
The rebar I used is size 9 rebar. Many of you have said about the rebar not being quite hard enough for making a blade. The reason I didn't forge weld a carbon steel cutting edge into the rebar is because as it was the first hatchet I had ever made, I wanted to be sure to not mess up, and so make it monosteel. However not having as suggested 1080 or something similar carbon steel roundstock, and not knowing anywhere to buy it from I took this approach. Maybe in the future I will attempt to forge weld a carbon edge.
