I never understood why people don't heat treat the entire axe head. It doesn't need to be "softer" than the edge. I literally see no benefit of doing it this way, only potential negatives.

Joshua Waddell there are many axes that are mild steel with a carbon bit welded in but for the solid tool steel axes you don’t need to have mire than a bit past the edge hardened. If only the edge is hard then you can hit the back when splitting wood without it chipping or if you drop it it won’t crack especially around the eye
