Richard, A great review centering on the features useful for repair work. Looks to be a useful bit of kit (the overlay is terrific) but I'm not sure I could justify the price considering the limited uses I have for a device of this type. Would be very useful in an industrial environment. 😊

Yeah that's pretty much what I thought, it's very nice if it suits your requirements, it would certainly be very useful in industrial environments especially where you are working in a hostile environment.

Nice Review. Thanks for this. Quick Question - Were you able to determine the Refresh Rate of the phone, from the phone itself?

Blackview has been solid for dashcam, but I'm not sure I'd take the leap into a full-blow smartphone with them. I prefer FLIR attachments to (maybe) help prevent early obsolescence.

Yes there are plenty of options, choose the best one that suits your personal requirements. I gave the previous Blackview phone that I reviewed (the 8800 Pro with FLIR) to Carlos from Retro Upgrade channel and he has been using it about a year so maybe he can comment if he's around

How does this compare to the Flir iPhone camera dongles (also priced at $300-$430)

The problem with these lesser known brand smartphones is often the software support. If you just want an IR camera, you can get better (as pointed out in the video). A big part of the value proposition is the smartphone portion of the device. And any device that is connected to the internet needs regular and timely security updates. For how long will the manufacturer provide these, if at all? I could not find any info about that in the product description.

Blackview have been around for quite some time specialising in this kind of rugged phone with FLIR. They have some track record at least. I gave the BV8800 Pro I reviewed a year or so ago to Carlos from Retro Upgrade and he uses it as his 'daily driver' phone as well as the thermal camera capability, so he could give some insight I guess

@@LearnElectronicsRepair Unfortunately, the fact that a company has existed for some time is not a reliable indicator. And it's not just Blackview. Lots of brands struggle with this. Motorola, Xiaomi, and Realme, to name a few. Providing updates is a surprisingly complicated (and thus, not cheap) process. So it's often dropped quickly, especially on everything not high-end. Maybe ask Carlos what Android version and which patch level his BV8800 Pro is currently at. It should be listed somewhere in the settings (probably under "About this phone" -> "Android version" or something like that). That should give an indication as to what to expect when the BV8900 gets on in years. It should be at least Android 11 (anything older is no longer maintained by Google). And the latest patch should ideally be from May or June 2023. But sadly, anything from this year is probably the best one can expect from a 2 year old mid-range phone, regardless of who made it.

Looks exactly like my iPhone 14 with otter box defender. I’ve never heard of this. If the thermal camera powers on I’m gonna get one. Is it possible to install a Linux distro instead of android?

This will be my next manufactured phone given its usefulness for work and play. The fact that this particular device can effectively turn off googles tracking abilities has a very big appeal for many and you can switch on the play store to download "verified" apps - haha - and not risk dealing with apk files from untrustworthy sites. The thermal cams appear to work just as well if not better than the flir range of portable phone compatible cams with their paltry battery life - every 3 months this needs changing as a 500mAh batt just cannot run these cams which cost as much as this phone! The waterproofing is always a worry given that mics need access to the mainboard which even with a water resistant coating can often be susceptible to water damage so a waterproof case is always recommended over trusting manufacturer sales and marketing hype and just plonking the phone in the drink. Rubber seals persih as do cases but with a cases you can see that it's persihed whereas inside a phone you cannot. Overall still a preferred product than many of the tracking/data stealing stealthy devices on the market today and good to see they are serious about updating and maintaining a hold in the mobile phone market.

weirdly, somehow, again, the 35% off link in description is a tracker.. . which my browser blocks. if anybody knows the coupon code to enter.. pleaser share that instead. the tracking is unforgiveable.

There is nothing sinister about it, Blackview offered myself and other creators some commission on any sales. That's what the tracker does, so they know who to attribute any sales to. Without it we wouldn't have the possibility to earn a bit of money. I suppose they could have done it a different way but I guess this is automated and just generates a spreadsheet of commissions.

I still think the Infiray T2S Plus which you did a review of 9 months ago, and apparently now has an iPhone plug in camera is still a camera I would get due to its resolution and it not being locked into a single phone. The constant shifting the physical and thermal images would frustrate me.

This is 3 year old technology crapware, not even full version flir thermal app. Get CAT S62 Pro. Also limited to 9fps is why this is hardly usable
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair Жыл бұрын
There are plenty of other options and what suits one persons needs will not be the same for someone else, I mentioned that quite clearly in the video. I welcome all recommendations in comments here. One thing you could have mentioned is the S62 Pro is much more expensive, 50%-80% more, so that is also a consideration. I had a quick look at the specs, the S62 Pro seems to have 160x120 FLIR resolution but I didn't see what the frame rate is. Do you know what it is?
@akierum
@akierum Жыл бұрын
Every FLIR sensor exported outside USA has limited framerate of 9fps, this is military limitation. I do find unlimited sensors available in EU too, so i wonder if you could order one and try to swap it? No soldering is needed it is in a socket. The CAT S62 Pro has zero screen flicker at any brightness level a very very rare find if you look at ledstrain forums
