When you hear Sandy sing, her voice just takes your breath away. I am still in awe of her incredible vocal range and purest of purest of her voice. There are many great British female folk singers that I listen to but Sandy's voice has always touched me deep inside that I cannot even describe. You know, it's not just great singing but something else that is beyond words.........

Sandy was beyond good ,she,s magical and hard to listen too sometimes ,if that makes sense, because it hurts that she,s not with us anymore. But her voice will never be forgotten

Once heard quiet joys of brotherhood sung live by Sandy. When the song ended there was silence from the audience followed by rapturous applause. The silence spoke volumes to me. Everyone at the venue was so moved there was a reluctance to break the trance Sandy had created. As you say Suzanne....beyond words

Yes Sandy was fantastic and I miss her as do many others, but blimey what a tone Richard has on that guitar. Cuts through the air like a lightning bolt.

It should be compulsory for any female thinking of singing as a career to listen to sandy , because her voice is one in a million and still unbeatable after 43 years

Sandy Denny....how haunting a voice especially with a song like this. If angels sing they must sound like this. Excellent Richard Thompson work on accordion, acoustic guitar is Sandy herself. Wish the track didn't just end abruptly as it did here....it should end as it did on the album.

Quite a haunting version of this song by the incredible Sandy Denny. I could just imagine what she could do had she sung some songs with the equally wonderful June Tabor -- whose voice is a little deeper. Together they would have been marvelous. I love the sound of the guitars on this supported by something that sounds like an accordion in my right channel. Great arrangement.

Among my favourite Sandy Denny songs, Marvelous of this wonderful area. photos, That also sounds like Richard on guitar. A little like Calvary Cross, an effect he doesn't much these days. At 4:08, one of my favourite images of Sandy, quite redolent of the feel of "Fairport Convention -land". Thanks for posting

Because it's a traditional folk song the provenance and author are unknown, i suppose that is part of the mystery and beauty of the words. There is a BBC archive recording of the song sang by Mary Doran an Irish traveller in 1952, possible the oldest recorded version. Sandy's is the first version I heard and still my favorite, but I also like the Bert Jansh version and Jimmy Page's Blackmountain side.

The version of 'Blackwaterside' that Joseph Ponce is referring to is possibly the 'Live At The B.B.C.' version, as that is a solo acoustic guitar version (It is still on KZbin).

Is this the version from the N. Star Grassman & the ravens? It sounds a little different to me but maybe it is remastered or something. Wonderful anyway. Sandy and R. Thompson were each other's best musical partners, IMHO.

You are 1000% right! Sandy & Richard were each others best musical partners - not to take anything away from Linda. The first time I heard "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" from Unhalfbricking, I felt Richard's guitar part caressing her vocal line.

It's the version from Sandy's 3CD compilation published by Hannibal Records in the 80s; the version on the actual NSG&R release fades in, whereas this has the full intro.

Less of the instrument players, more of the singer. The instruments are too heavy and the pace too plodding. Doesn't leave room for her to extend or shorten a line, or use her incredible ability to almost whisper notes. That's why I liked many of the recordings on What We Did On Our Holidays, the instruments are restrained, not much thumpy drumming and loud guitar.

I love this version and the landscape photos are great. But including 21st century tourists in the photos is so jarring to the mood -- doesn't work. At least the musicians who revived the old traditional songs in the 60's had the good taste to dress like 19th century gypsies. Now people wear pastel hoodies and there is NO romance whatsoever.
