next time buy a 250 foot length of blade and cut the blade size yourself. weld it up to make the loop with a mig or stick or spot or even torch it. very easy to do. grind the weld smooth. its what they do when you order them precut, except then you are very limited with your blades if you are stuck with a definite length!

#WranglerRIGGS Reminds me of my grandfather who was a tool & die maker. He built a bandsaw that was mounted on an I-beam that would pivot at one end at an angle in an attempt to cut a bronze ingot that came out of a broken smelting furnace. His approach was to use a hydraulic cylinder to control the rate that the beam lowered. He was never able to solve the problem of the bandsaw blade drifting to one side as it cut, which eventually caused the blade to break...but that didn't matter to me as a kid watching him build that machine...it was awesome. His saw was far from being as robust as yours. Brings back great memories. Nice job!

Are your rollers hardened or just turned steel? My Dad did R&D on Sawmills and built parts for them for many years. The first thing to fix was the roller guides they were not holding up over time. I know that after the redesign and hardening they never needed to be replaced again. I know one mill ran daily for several years with no noticeable wheel wear. If you want any information on that I would be happy to help. I like all of the videos of you sawmill build.

Matt, Fascinating build! My husband and I are very impressed, especially since you did most of the work yourself. We binged on the first 12 episodes. Elected the playlist. There is no "stop" on my iPad, otherwise I would have left the following comments after the appropriate episode. 1. You don't need to scoop out paint to keep the rim clean. Home Depot sells plastic pouring spouts/lips that fit on the edge of the paint can. Best for 1-gal cans. Allows you to pour out paint into say rolling trays without messing up the rim. While ours have lasted for literally decades, if you can't easily clean them, they are cheap enough to be disposable. 2. Loved that Triton portable pseudo saw horse/vise. Again, amazing and innovative build. Never saw a horizontal band saw mill before, but it makes sense and looks much safer than the standard vertical ones used by, say, Hearne Hardwoods.

To automate the guide mechanism you could use linear actuators that attach to the outer ends of the guide mechanisms. Cap the ens, drill and tap holes in them and attach screw type linear actuators to them.

Good project! I built a band mill about 20 years ago that will cut a 36" x 25' log. It has paid for itself many times over. A suggestion on the blade guides is to use a horizontal bearing to keep the blade from moving back. The back flange on your rollers will wear with out a direct back up bearing. This is especially true on your saw as wide as it is. I like that both of your guides are adjustable, that should work well when starting a very large log. I don't know what type of blade tensioner you plan to use but I very highly recommend a direst reading hydraulic pressure gauge/cell. I originally had a spring tensioner but changed to a hydraulic cell and it made a world of difference being able to read the tension/pressure at a glance and adjust when necessary. The tension will change when the blade changes temperature. #WrangleRIGGS

Hydraulic raising/lowering,log turning/loading and drive is the way to go,especially the drive.The first time you try to push that thing through hard assed oak and such,you'll be adding hydraulic drive-believe me!!Oh,one more thing,when you have your first blade break and about a foot piece of it comes whizzing past your head like a supersonic frisbee,you'll respect that machine much more and think a little differently about the process-believe me and#WranglerRIGGS

OK< a metal framing hammer is better than a wooden mallet, but it's still not a ball peen hammer. Those framing hammers often have a cross hatch pattern on the face that will help keep the nail head from slipping off when being struck, but it will leave an impact pattern on the metal you are striking with it.

I think you will discover very quickly that you want the blade guide rollers to be adjustable. I'm curious to see how it works for you though because I am always adjusting mine to be as close to the log as possible.
@anonymous_friend7 жыл бұрын
What happens if you leave the guide rollers set wide and cut a smaller log?
@philipmayes63767 жыл бұрын
The guide rollers control the angle of the blade through the log. The closer they are together, the more control they have. If the guide rollers are 48" apart but you are only cutting a 30" log, that's 18 extra inches that the blade has a chance to deflect up or down. You want to constantly minimize the chances the blade has to rise or dive.
