It's really hit or miss. Works nicely in this example because of the subject's contrast from the background, but if you have a really busy background you're probably better off using a different technique

Damn. Our character was in a desert-ish environment so he pretty much stood out from all the sand that would have saved us so much time

Next time! with that much contrast you could probably pull a luma matte as well, we always try mattes/keying techniques before roto (because we are the most proactive lazy compositors on the planet)

I worked on this film on the visual effects department and it was crazy how much practical effect and real sets thy used that whole studio was literally orange because of the master roger deakins

LightPoint Films roger deakins lit the room orange from a lot of practical orange roof lights. There was a little color correction but it was an awsome environment

Too bad the end result that Deakins gave looks like they just simply put a single orange filter gel over the monitor screen ... its waay too flat and not like a real evening haze at all .... its one of the more disappointing cinematography in 2049 ...

I lived this in real life!!! A few years ago here in Australia they had bush fires and made it look exactly like in the movie, As if we were on Mars, was so cool and haunting walking out the door like I lived on a different planet. The filmakers admited they were inspired by this event and seeing this martian orange smoke glow in Sydney in photos they saw.
