In this video Josh provides a basic overview of how he tackled replicating the apocalypse style effect from the movie Blade Runner 2049 with the use of miniatures and compositing. Hope you enjoy :)

This is absolute perfection! The fact that this was made with little to no budget in comparison to how much Hollywood films are made is astounding. If I ever make films, miniature work would 100% be the preferred route to take! Phenomenal job on this, I hope to see more like this in the future! I subbed too, even though this deserves WAY more 👍

I recognize one of the female figures. The woman standing, bent foward with her hands in the sand looks like it was inspired by photogropher Gerhardt Thompson's composition, "Close Encounter". The b&w photo has a woman in that pose on a white sand dune under a gray stormy looking sky with sunlight barely breaking through the clouds. I believe I first saw it at deviantART around 2010. If the figure is in the film, that may be where they got the idea from. Or, at least wher the figurine you used came from.

hey how did you do the fog effect in after effects? im trying to make a fog like that
@bigjawgettys
@bigjawgettys Жыл бұрын
Hey! So the fog effect is somewhat made up of layers, but the main thing is actually colour grading rather then any real fog. So the shot for example where I am walking away from the camera at 0:47. I have been separately colour graded to appear a lot more orange as if there are a lot of dust particles between me and the camera if that makes sense. So if you just took the layer of me walking and put it into a new composition I would still look exactly the same, Its just a grade. Same goes with the statues at 1:10, everything is rotoscoped and on its own layer. So in the shot when I walk between the two statues the are colour graded as follows: The furthest statue in the background has its shadows put up quite a bit with a very light orange /yellow making them appear very similar in luma and hue as the distant fog. For me walking in front of the statue, my shadows are put up a bit with some orange/yellow but are not quite as bright as the shadows on the statue behind me. And the statue in the foreground has its shadows as a much darker orange/red than the rest of the scene. This all gives off the illusion of objects becoming more ingulfed in the fog the further away they are from the camera. Underneath all this however is a solid colour that is heavily feathered on the horizon line so the fog tapers off along the ground. And on top off all this is a orange/yellow solid colour at a very low opacity. So the fog is more of an illusion using the colour of the multiple layers rather than an overlay, although overlays can help. The key is to have different elements of your scene rotoscoped depending on their distance from the camera. You can play around with having different solid colour layers of different opacities in-between various layers and see how that works. I hope this helps a bit, its hard to explain with just text, I'm happy to answer any other questions. I'll maybe do a more in depth video on the vfx work specifically :)
