That has to be one of the nicest synth sounds I've ever heard coming from a VG99...

smashmash I've tried this patch thru a looper and it is great fun! Go for it!

I had no idea how they did that. I haven't heard such great midi via guitar work since 1973 Isla Vista street gig w/full rack of gear - and actually pre-midi.
@smashmash5 жыл бұрын
The secret is....it's not MIDI - I know I put midi in the title but that's easier than explaining it's actually the Roland VG99 restructuring the wave form of each string, so it's not actually triggering anything. Essentially what you're hearing is very processed guitar sounds.

Outstanding! Weird I was just listening to this yesterday! Q: It's not clear how you managed the backing swell/pad.
@smashmash4 жыл бұрын
If you watch my foot on the expression pedal, I hit the chord and bring the expression pedal down which acts as vol for pad but also triggers the freeze at about third of the way. The pad is at full volume at halfway then the lead sound comes in over remaining travel. Lots of control assigns going on!

Your channel is an inspiration. Thank you. Only thing is having got the FTP I now crave a VG99. Does it require its own separate controller?
@smashmash7 жыл бұрын
Simeon Perlin thank you! Yes the VG99 really needs a GK3 pickup to get everything out of it. It's a real shame that if you want to use both FTP and VG99 at same time you end up with 2 extra pickups on your guitar!
@DespairQuietlyPlease7 жыл бұрын
smashmash thanks again. The v99 is no longer available and monstrously expensive the rare used ones online but the gr55 looks like a good hardware alternative to ftp (ie. no laptop required). Plus no need to get an additional foot switch as midi controller. I’m guessing/hoping the gr55 can be used as a midi controller too to control vsts on laptop.
@smashmash7 жыл бұрын
Simeon Perlin GR55 doesn't have the vg99 capabilities but a lot of satisfied users. They need a lot of tweaking to get the midi working well. Also patch changes are veeeeeery slooooooooow! Try before buy and read vguitarforums - there's a dedicated set of boards for gr55 and patch sharing

Now I regret trading in my VG99. Dang!
@smashmash9 жыл бұрын
Well it's not the easiest box to pry it's best tricks out of and I've thought about getting shot for a Kemper but....but...there's always something new you can find!
@stemajor79 жыл бұрын
+smashmash At the time, i felt disconnected to the sounds, if you know what i mean. The place that took it got a bargain from me (£150!) I was desperate! Yes, I wouldn't mind a Kemper. You've put a bit more effort into the VG99 and are getting your moneys worth with the pedal board, you might regret it! Your other videos are great by the way.
