same here! I don’t fly it nearly as often as I used to though but the vortex was a kick ass beast. You might like my classic review of it I did last year kzbin.info/www/bejne/inKkpqGto9VpecU

I'm thinking about buying a racing drone I've never had one do you think this one is good for beginners or do you have any others in mind
@JohnCuppi
@JohnCuppi 8 жыл бұрын
yes, I think this one is great for beginners and even experts because it can be modified to be quite a mean machine, even as it is it holds its own every well. of course if you plan to compete in real races though ie at serious tournaments, this won't cut it. the guys there have extremely optimized quads. but I'm not that type of person, I prefer fun-flying at interesting locations and around the yard/open space. 250 pro is excellent for that. big question though: will this be your first drone or just first racing drone?

yes. the vortex itself is a solid unit. it's my daily quad and has survived so many crashes and incidents. I like it even more with taranis.

ok, that's good, then you have some prior experience. I'd highly recommend reading up on Taranis, buying an XR4-SB receiver, and get the Blade version of the vortex anyway since they usually have the best price with coupons. Swap the receiver out when you get it, takes about 20min-30min and no soldering required. if you want spektrum that's also okay too, and very easy to use. but Taranis is more powerful and will grow with you over time.
@jussa101
@jussa101 8 жыл бұрын
Tyler McBride there's a new 150 version I'd recommend that. Since its small and doesn't weigh much its less likely to break. And its a good size to the point where it can grow with you.

www.horizonhobby.com/product/multirotor/multirotor-aircraft/bind-n-fly-15087--1/vortex-150-blh9550 Here's a link to it. I'm really waiting for the first batch of users to get a hold of them to see how they are. Too bad they likely won't be shipping until December knowing Blade's estimated shipping time for things being way off...

hey man I got caught in a tree branch the other day about 10 feet off of the ground it was at the very tip of the branch. all I did was use the throttle and the props chopped the Tree branch off and it fell
@JohnCuppi
@JohnCuppi 8 жыл бұрын
Dontbeweakvato it's a beast! The blades will cut off sizable branches.
@Dontbeweakvato
@Dontbeweakvato 8 жыл бұрын
John Cuppi yep. they will chop your pinky finger good too. I've been uploading every video mostly GoPro but also flight footage too. 4s is insane where 3s is only real quick. 4s and your 100ft away in a blink. I can do some pretty badass stunts and Acro without my GoPro. but with the GoPro it's a little bit heavier on the stock Motors and it feels funny
@JohnCuppi
@JohnCuppi 8 жыл бұрын
Cool, I subbed to your channel. I don't fly with a gopro or other HD camera. If I did I would probably use a RunCam 2. 4s IS crazy fast and the bullnose props the motors burn up like crazy.
@Dontbeweakvato

iFly always fpv but when I refer to you flying line of sight with say a Vortex or any race quad other guys will say that stupid it's meant to be flown fpv. you know you got some skills if you can fly a race quad line of sight but very fast
@JohnCuppi
@JohnCuppi 8 жыл бұрын
Dontbeweakvato I totally agree. I actually find flying line of sight harder than fpv. You always have to worry about your orientation. But, doing FPV tricks is a major skill.

Like me some of us got our RC start with fixed wings, 30 years of building & flying balsa models there was no such thing as fpv back then lol, I find it weird that some quad guys can’t fly line of site!

and what reciver are you using for the spectrum and what is better spectrum or frsky
@JohnCuppi
@JohnCuppi 8 жыл бұрын
The receiver that comes with this mode is called SPM4648 which is what I'm using with it. Even though this video praises the Blade model for being easy to use and setup, I have recently switched my Vortex to FrSky taranis so I can get voltage and signal strength sent directly to my controller/transmitter. Spektrum doesn't offer this.

What changes have to be made to run the DAL props? Are there settings in Clean Flight or do you just put them on. The link for the bumper is to the plate, do you have a link to the bumpers themselves? Thanks
@JohnCuppi
@JohnCuppi 8 жыл бұрын
Charles McCullough I never changed any settings in clean flight after putting on the DAL prop, all stock PIDs. If you are running an "original" 250 pro, one of the first batch sold you need to be careful though. Those props can blow the power distribution board. It's mostly a non issue because they "fixed" the boards almost immediately after the first shipments in January. As for the bumpers I'll find those and get back to you :)

Charles McCullough ok great you're probably good then :) I'm glad you liked the video, thank you! I'll be doing another vortex 250 pro video soon as well. I'm working on a couple things right now, battery voltage/voice telemetry statistics sent to the TX and addition of a micro GPS for distance tracking.

It's crazy for me to watch this, and it was only about a year and a half ago and now so much is different... I still fly my vortex though! It's just been upgraded with better motors, and I no longer use spektrum at all. My prop choice today is HQprop v1s 5x4.3x3 :) and battery is 1300mah Black Label 4S 80C in case you were wondering :)

how long is the flight time
@JohnCuppi

Flight time is roughly 5 minutes on a 1300mah 3s battery, depending on how fast you choose to go. Around 8 minutes on the 1800 4s.

Lower your P's or raise your D's but that bouncing thing it does after a roll in horizon mode is too much. Also. forget about horizon and angle. Go acro.

We sound similar hehe. I started out with a horizon hobby 350QX quadcopter and it had a "sport mode." I transplanted it to a carbon fiber frame. I thought it so boss at the time. Then I bought the vortex and didn't want anything to do with the 350qx ever again. I'm going to build an X-frame quad with the new stingerswarm TrueX frame most likely, maybe in a month from now! Seeing this video again I think about now and last summer and what a difference in my experience level and hardware... but I was having fun and that's all that matters.

DUDE!! Exact same story here except I started with DJI shit and really admired the "attitude mode" Haha this is great. Let's fly together some day.
