On what would have been Amy Winehouse’s 40th birthday, we are joined exclusively by her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. Married between May 2007 to August 2009, Amy and Blake enjoyed an intense and often tumultuous relationship across 7 years. One of their breakups led Amy to write one of the most iconic albums of all time, 'Back to Black', which she said was about the state of her relationship with Blake at the time. Winning her 5 Grammys, Amy dedicated her win to her 'Blake incarcerated' and said she'd never felt the way she felt about Blake, with anyone else in her life. This morning, Blake will reveal why he's no longer prepared to be cast as the villain, why others need to take responsibility for Amy's drug use/death, why he has to deal with countless death threats and why he doesn’t think a reconciliation with Amy’s father Mitch would work. Amy died in July 2011 from alcohol poisoning, with Blake in jail at the time. Upon hearing the news from prison guards, Blake collapsed and was put on suicide watch. Blake says he thinks about Amy all of the time and is often left jarred if he ever sees her on TV and on what would have been her 40th birthday, says he'll love her forever. A biopic on Amy, directed by Hollywood director Sam Taylor-Johnson, has also recently wrapped, with its release scheduled for early 2024. Titled 'Back to Black', the movie will delve into Amy's rise to stardom, iconic music as well as her marriage to Blake. Playing Blake will be Jack O'Connell, who Blake will say travelled to Leeds to meet with him before filming started.

Suzanne Reid is so rude! She never once asked how he was was in his recovery. She spoke to him like he was a bold school child. It’s not his fault, they were both addicts, it has to start somewhere. Just cos Amy was famous doesn’t make her right and him wrong. What’s a strange way to treat him after all this time!! Hope she’ll be happy lookin back on this. Go back to sticking up for poor little Haz and Maz.

I always disliked him for introducing her to heroin. But they were both in it together. Amy had serious mental health issues and was a destructive force in her own right - as well as being a musical genius. Added to the fact that there were plenty of other people who brought about her downfall who haven’t taken responsibility. He is well spoken, eloquent & appears as though he has truly reflected. I wish him strength on his recovery & a measure of peace. And it’s just sad we don’t have Amy here any longer.

Im a huge Amy fan and I think its nice to see Blake clean and looking well. I dont at all think he should be blamed for Amy's death. The facts are that Amy was an addict before she met Blake: her first addiction was alcohol. At the time she moved to Camden and released Frank, heroin was becoming popular on the scene. Blake was into coke at that time and had friends who did heroin, but Amy was more into alcohol and weed. So no, Blake didnt turn her into a junkie. She said no to hard drugs when she first met him. She made the decision on her own after B2B was released and her mental health declined from the pressure of fame. Ultimately, Amy died from alcohol. I would understand maybe hating Blake if she died from heroin, but the vice that her dad said she didnt need to go to rehab for, is what killed her and it had nothing to do with Blake.

What a lot of people fail to realise was that Amy was a very strong-willed soul. She wasn't as weak as what people thought - no one made her do anything that Amy didn't want to do. Yes, Blake did introduce Amy to heroin but she was already smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol years before they met, so she'd already had history with substances and had a history of mental health issues with eating disorders and self harm from being a teenager. She was very vulnerable, but I wouldn't say she was fragile - there's a difference. She just loved Blake to death and wanted to always be on the same level as him. She put him first all the time and never really focused on herself sadly. Happy 40th, Amy - we love and miss you every single day xx

Blake was not the cause of Amy's demise. As a child she loved her dad deeply, and they had a very strong bond, especially musically. Then he left. She developed Borderline Personality Disorder which is often linked to a trauma in childhood. You can tell by her behaviour she was desperately trying to fill a painful void for which Blake was never responsible. She would have had turbulent relationships with whoever she had met, and likely to turn to substances to numb the depression. She died from alcohol poisoning, not drugs, after she and Blake had been separated for some time. All of this turbulence and loss is reflected in her music, her beautiful soulful voice. Her father has never acknowledged any responsibility or introspection in his part.

I'm sure she would be so happy to see Blake clean as he is now. About the guilt, he's not guilty. He is also a victim of an addiction, like she was. They both were victims of an industry that doesn't care about the human behind the artist. And everything that drugs bring behind will make them to take paths that any healthy person would take. But that's how the addiction works. Blake, Tyler, Mitch, her friends... I'm sure they did what they could. And it's so hard to empathize with a situation where a person is so wealthy and excused that everyone does whatever she asks, so much that she can approach to almost feel herself inmortal, invulnerable. The only thing you can do is either leave her or be next to her. Nobody knows what would've happened if she wouldn't have been famous. But I hope that this helps to create mechanisms to guide young artists with high reputation to handle their life when everyone wants to make profit out of them. Glad to see Blake better, glad to see Amy's foundation helping other people. Glad to see James and her family going ahead with their lives. We all are lucky to learn so much with her. While i do recognise the role Blake played a part in Amy's demise ..ppl need to remember, Amy apparently had her own issues way before she even knew him, from her younger years, then add the heights of fame .I agree ,Amy would not have wanted him to take all blame .Her parents' separation seems to have had a huge impact.

I think thats where her issues started to be honest. I don't know much about her parents divorce but my own parents vicious break up and divorced traumatised me so much I won't ever marry because I don't wanma be tied to someone legally and go through what my mother did. If Amy's parents break up was bad it probably left a lot of trauma on her then throw in massive fame and money the media stalking her I'm not surprised she used drugs as an escape

it was never Blakes fault and its unfair they put all the blame on him. Im impressed how much he has evolved and how reflected he is. That's maybe the only good thing about going through hard times in life you grow and become stronger. You can never stop someone from taking drugs it has to come from themselves. Her father and the record company still made her go on stage, make music even though they saw and knew what condition she was in. So sad she can't be around today and see how much we all loved her. I always hoped she would one day be done with all the partying and just mature just like Blake did here and we all could laugh and look back on the good old times still listening to her beautiful music.

As someone who is in recovery i can empathize with what it’s like to look back at your active addiction and see a completely different person that you don’t recognize. Being young is hard enough to figure out your way but then add in drugs, fame and alcohol it could be an absolute disaster. I’ve lost probably 30+ people in my life and to be the one standing alone at the end is a very HEAVY feeling. It sounds like he has done a lot of self reflection and put a lot of thought into his younger self actions. At the end of the day, that’s the most that could be asked of him.

Dude there are many people in their 20s going through worse and still being able to be way better than him. Justifying someone just cuz of feeling sorry for him is not fair way. I feel sorry for him too, but for him being literally trash person unable to stay away from drugs and unable to support Amy in it aswell. There are many people in this world who have been able to fight with drug addictions and they made it very sooner than him... He also was completely unable to be a man for her... and also for himself. And he did not change so much when u look at him, he is again only crying about himself. He is not poor, he is weak and thats kind of a choice to be like this :) .... He would be strong if he would come here with awareness, saying smth like: "I know I played a big part in her death and I'm truly sorry for that all. I cannot turn back the time, but what I can do and I'm doing is working on myself but also trying to remedy my crimes of what i did in my past. Trying to help her family as much as possible ...... " and X Y Z other things what he could be doing :) Instead, he came to only cry about himself again. No responsibility, just fragile child inside. And thats his choice and really bad one. This is one of the main reasons why Amy is not with us anymore. And I believe he was loving her in some way, but in his selfish damaged way which was not healthy at all... and he was supposed to realise this in time and to work on himself already.... but he did not. He only kept crying and he is like this till these days.... sad story...

As I've got older, I realized that we can not keep blaming Blake. Yes, he introduced Amy to drugs - But we also have to take into consideration Amy's mental health at the time. She could have said no, but chose to take them. She even once paid money as she got Alex started on drugs and felt guilty. She sent him to rehab. That was Amy. I used to hate Blake with a passion as my absolute idol died. We need to remember Amy DID NOT have drugs in her system at the time of death and she was clean - this was alcohol. She always said how much she loved Blake. Love him or hate him, It's been so long, I'm ready to forgive, but never forget.

He did this interview to make himself feel better and to get a bit of limelight. I think it’s shameful. My own addiction I can’t put on anybody else, I made those choices on my own, unfortunately my family and friends had the unenviable task of trying to pick up the pieces. I know my actions had devastating consequence for other people’s lives. No one can say for sure but with what is known of Amy from interviews and such, I think she would really resent to be presented as someone with such little agency that the entire culpability of her actions falls on 1 guy. Not to mention it’s laughable that these news anchors and so much of the media act as though the music industry isn’t riddled with substances and addicts looking for a party. Blake was probably one of the most decent people at the industry parties Amy had to attend. I think he wasn’t the best partner to her towards the end of their marriage, and perhaps some of it was the drugs. However, through the years I think Blake has shown himself to also be gracious, vulnerable in many ways and like he said, able to take accountability. Mitch could take note. Between that and how, regardless of the stage of his addiction, he always manages to look fashionable, I can see what Amy saw in him.
