Rare Replay is great. Absolutely love the collection on my Xbox.

The version of Rare Replay that I have is the physical media version (which is the one you see in the video). However, I was very disappointed that the physical version does not include 007 GoldenEye, only the digital version. Aside from that detail, it is indeed a great collection for those who enjoy Rare's games, especially for those who love the N64 (the best era of Rare).

These explosions were cutting-edge at the time. That said, it seems N64 drops frames every time there's one on screen.
@vcdecide3 ай бұрын
I like the frame drops at the moment when things are being destroyed, because it gives the feeling that the object is offering resistance and isn't being easily destroyed like in the Xbox One version. So, the destruction on the N64 gives a greater sense of realism A good example of this is trying to puncture a soccer ball with an object that isn't very sharp; the ball will offer some degree of resistance before it pops, instead of bursting like a birthday balloon. That's the feeling I got between the destruction on the N64 and the Xbox.

Notice the water (the same water that appears in the thumbnail) of the N64 and Xbox One versions... it’s for these reasons that I think the N64 version of Blast Corps is much better than the Rare Replay/Xbox version. Yes, it's true that the N64 version runs at 20fps. Yes, it's true that the frame rate on the N64 is variable and can drop to 10fps. Yes, it's true that the resolution is much lower. Yes, it's true that there are slowdowns. But not everything is about graphics; it’s about the experience surrounding the gameplay. In that regard, the N64 version is better. It’s not that the Rare Replay version is bad or unplayable-far from it-but much of what is in the game was built upon the limitations and resources of the N64.

Right off the bat the sound design is great on the N64. The music sounds great. That style of music sounds familiar...of course it is none other than the amazing Graeme Norgate. Composer to Goldeneye 007, Perfect Dark, and Timesplitters. Fitting considering Rare Replay. Also it is nice that the N64 puts the controller on the screen to show how to play.

The only reason the game is out of sync is because they "fixed" the framerate to be consistent 30. This also makes some modern emulated games difficult to play due to running a little too fast. DK64 on Wii U for an example was tricky to play at times cause the game was running too fast for the player when slowdown was intentional on the original console.
@vcdecide3 ай бұрын
The Xbox version runs at a constant 30fps, while the N64 version has variable 20fps (dropping lower, sometimes reaching 10fps during certain explosions). So, the reason why the N64 version can't keep up with the Xbox version's steady 30fps is that the N64 version slows down during moments of intense action or when there are many elements on the screen. Note: On Nintendo 64 emulators, the game runs at a constant 30fps... in addition to a resolution more or less similar to the Xbox One version. In summary, the N64 version has slowdown and frame rate drops, while the Xbox Rare Replay version does not.
@vcdecide3 ай бұрын
Some people won't understand what I'm about to say, but the "correct way" to play this game is not through the Rare Replay/Xbox version... but rather the N64 version with its slowdowns and frame rate drops. The developers were aware of this, and the game was built with that in mind. In some parts of the game, this slowdown is crucial for you to get the timing right and think about what to do next.
@aj_gen_ace3 ай бұрын
@@vcdecide Sometimes less is more. I couldn't even play Starfox 64 on Switch cause they bumped the framerate up to 30fps when it should be 20fps. Everything was running too fast to react.
@Crazy_Gamer_OG3 ай бұрын
Yea, the higher FPS breaks a lot of games because devs built the games to run around the frame dipping. Goldeneye 007 is a lot harder because the higher FPS makes enemies respawn infinitely in some levels when they should stop spawning.
@vcdecide3 ай бұрын
I'll try to explain all of this with a real example, which is the game Thunder Force IV, originally released for the Sega Genesis. The Sega Genesis version has several slowdowns. However, when the game was released for the Saturn, the slowdowns were gone. You could say that the more powerful Saturn processor "fixed" (eliminated) the slowdowns. But for many players, the removal of these slowdowns made the Saturn version worse, because the slowdowns helped in many moments of the game. In fact, in the Nintendo Switch version, the developers included an option to play Thunder Force IV with slowdowns (Sega Genesis) or without slowdowns (Sega Saturn). Slowdowns aren't always a bad thing, especially when they are intended by the developers and are part of the game’s DNA. Obviously, in the case of the N64, part of the slowdown was due to the system's limitations, but this can also be used to benefit the gameplay, turning something inevitable into something fundamental for the gameplay.

Xbox version controls waaaaay better than the original N64 one, so i am picking up that version solely because of that. The newer version has a weird issue though: you need to do everything a lot faster because (for some reason) the truck with the nuclear missile goes slightly faster, giving you less seconds to finish a mission. Most of the time this doesn't represent an issue... until you get to that mission where you need to use those 2 or 3 boats and a ferry to allow the truck to pass. It is a nightmare on Xbox.
@davidaitken85033 ай бұрын
It doesn't sound like that version is as good then, does it? What is better about the controls? I always thought the N64 original had excellent controls.
@vcdecide3 ай бұрын
@@davidaitken8503 The big problem with people evaluating the gameplay of Nintendo 64 games is sometimes not even related to the software, but rather to the physical controller, as the Nintendo 64's analog stick is fragile, and this can negatively affect the gameplay assessment. It's one thing to play a Nintendo 64 game with a new controller where the analog stick is in perfect condition, and a completely different thing to play a game on the Nintendo 64 with a controller whose analog stick is damaged (worn out).
@gingataisen3 ай бұрын
@@vcdecide Dude, don't blame the controller for games running at 16fps.
@vcdecide3 ай бұрын
@@gingataisen The "16fps" on the N64 makes it easier to hit the weak spot of objects, destroying them with a single blow instead of several. However, for that to happen, the N64 controller needs to be in good condition, which isn't very common, as the controller is fragile.

Rare/Microsoft could have reached an agreement with Nintendo for this collection to include the 3 Donkey Kong Country games, plus Diddy Kong Racing and Donkey Kong 64.
@X2011racer3 ай бұрын
@vcdecide Rare Replay came out before Minecraft Cross-Play was introduced. Microsoft and Nintendo were still rivals at the time, but Phil Spencer just became president of Xbox Game Studios not long before Rare Replay was announced. It wouldn't be long before he began to downplay their rivalry with Nintendo and become friends with said Cross-Play and Microsoft DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Banjo & Kazooie for Challenger Pack 3 and Steve for Challenger Pack 7). Still, you have to remember that Nintendo is not willing to have their games playable on competitors' consoles no matter what, so Donkey Kong Country is out of the question for Rare Replay. Diddy Kong Racing would've be possible by changing the name, removing Diddy Kong, and reworking Krunch to look less like a Kremling as Rare owns 99% of the game and Nintendo only owns 1%, being the Kongs (Diddy, Dixie, and Tiny), the name and appropriate trademark(s).

Kinda like how Kaze Emanuar improved SM64's framerate on original hardware.
