I finally figured out where this figure came from the other day after doing more research. It is a Kenner Starting Line-Up Ty Cobb figure that was made in 1996.
I had bought the uniform, accessories, body and head it came with, but there was no box so I didn't know what toy maker made him, and I couldn't figure out why the figure was left handed.
I couldn't find any additional Ty Cobb figures way back when so it wasn't until recently where I saw the figure in a box that the mystery was solved.
This figure was made by Kenner (Hasbro). It was made in China, which might explain why they gave him a left-hander's mitt thinking he was a left-handed fielder. He was left-handed, but only when he batted. He threw right handed; he also wrote right handed. Thus, I am sure someone forced him out of being a natural lefty when it came to writing and throwing a ball.
That might explain why Ty Cobb was such a horrible outfield player. He had the highest number of errors compared to everyone else. That was one of the records he broke--a bad one. He holds the record for fielding errors as an outfielder in the American League (271 errors). Who knew? I didn't.
I just knew Ty Cobb was good, but I guess he was good when it came to batting, stealing bases, and scoring points.
Here's another interesting thing about Ty Cobb. He struck out exceptionally rarely. Babe Ruth's first strikeout came at Ty Cobb's expense. Apparently, with Babe Ruth, a left hander, he was struck out seven times.
I didn't know Babe Ruth was left handed, and I didn't know Ty Cobb batted left handed. This was a great history lesson for me.
Everyone have a great day, and have fun collecting and/or customizing.
