Aika's suicide was all for the greater good in the end. If it wasn't for that Mahiro and Yoshino would never try to save Hakaze from the island. Hakaze needed to start distrusting the Tree of Genesis which she was protecting and start fighting it. Aika could not take down the whole of the Kusaribe clan, they would kill her, trusting the tree and that in turn would eventually reset civilization since the Tree of Genesis would manifest and the mage of Exodus would be powerless to deal with it. Aika understood that the moment she saw Hakaze and understood who she was, thus Aika took her own life and set the world save operation in motion.

Just watched the anime and LOVED it. BUT... WTF Aika had that destiny? It makes no sense to me, considering that was her power which was as needed for the plot. Better to stick with her instead of puting someone in her place halfway through the story and who didn't had any connection to it. Just for the sake of drama?
