My parents travelled all around the world in their returement. Pickpocketing is much more sophisticated and problematic in European cities with huge crowds like Paris. Fewer cars to break into, and they are less coonfrontational and can steal stealthily. The only US city that has it at Euro levels is NYC. Dont be so dismissive of the warnings. At least in the states you know the moment you are being robbed, because it is usually face to face.

Was just in Paris and people have no problem jolting across the street, probably because drivers are pretty respectful towards pedestrians but did have at least one drive gun it when I was crossing the street as if he wanted to hit some people. And yeah, American cities suck. Partly because they are designed around cars and trucks and nothing else, in part because of decades of lobbying from car makers and oil companies.
