I own this sub and it's currently on my main system. The room I have it in isn't that big, but boy does this thing hit. When the Evil Excelsior warps in in Star Trek Into Darkness the walls shake like the ship is coming through them. Without placement and tuning it does boom a little, but it's all relative to price. I paid $200 for this and for that price it's damn hard to beat. Maybe for my new basement theater I'll get something with a lot more kick, but for the price I paid it's awesome even if not as good as better subs.
@laloromero68602 жыл бұрын
Where did you pay $200 at? I literally just paid $540 from Polk because everyone else wanted like $350-$450 from eBay not including shipping and Amazon is now selling them for like $600 plus.. So I figured I just buy new and have warranty. We no longer need Alamo Draft House or EVO theaters.. 😝

Refused to let it go after the amp quit… removed the amp, screwed a 3/4 mdf at the back to cover the hole, and powered with a crown xti1000 (which has built crossover among other goodies). Gotta be careful to no overpower it, otherwise it does bottom out and it sounds horrible. It’s been close to 4 years on this setup and I can tell that the original plate amp is close to the limit of the speaker. I also can confirm that there are weird port noises on 10-20 hz at high gain/volume (yes it can play low notes well). Appreciate your work here sir!

There are/were two kinds of these: first "gen" had BASH amp (as indicated by BASH logo on plate), 2nd "gen" had a non-bash amp. Seems like the 2nd gen (like the one you have) is a lot less reliable - poor quality/cheap caps are usually a culprit. I think the sub (regardless of the variant) is actually quite decent sound-wise and the bad reputation is mainly tied to the amp failures. Sad situation where a $3 worth of parts render a $300 sub inop.

Great video, I primarily do car audio and in that category you can find a ton of used subwoofers, particularly image dynamics and jl audio for under 200$. I had always wondered how my IDMAX 12 would sound in my house. Additionally, the JL fathom (home audio sub) is essentially just a JLw7 with an internal amp. I think it would be highly interesting if you explored car audio subs for home use, most have overbuilt cast baskets, quality spiders and magnet structures. There are always deals on those subs on offerup. I bought both my w7 and idmax 12 for 200 each.

@blazermdx4 жыл бұрын
I really don’t have too much experience with Sony subs and zero experience with the SA-WM40. With that said, after looking at the specs, the PSW505 should have it beat in terms or output and extension. When it comes to placement, all rooms are different. Look up “subwoofer crawl”, here on KZbin. This process will help you find the best spot, in your room, for the sub to achieve it’s maximum performance in your room, If you aren’t having to run that Digital Coaxial cable more than 10 feet or so, it should work for most subs. It seems many people have had issues running Digital Coaxial cables in long runs, due to impedance. Again, sounds like it works. A room that size, I bet that PSW505 will make you a very happy camper!

You can run different brand subs, not a problem at all. It just takes more time, getting them properly setup. Ideally, all your subs would match but it’s not necessary. I can’t help you with the hook up method you describe as I’ve only ever had 2 subs, plugged into the sub 1 and sub 2, on my receivers. @JaZu4 жыл бұрын
So I used a bunch of Polyfill to seal up the slot. I did a little candle flame test to see how well it was sealed. I was pleased with the results. I used REW to measure the improvements. To my surprise the roll off occurred about 2hz lower than the box claim. The output was real consistent. I run the Klipsch 12sw which they perform well together. I also have a PSW10 that I keep crossedover a bit high so the other two subs can just focus on the low end. I actually purchased the Klipsch after watching your review. I was a little hesitant but $149 at Costco was too good of a deal. Honestly, if it were regular price I wouldn’t have made the purchase. Probably would have just kept saving.

Why subwoofer manufacturers do not use passive radiators? I think it is much better than the sealed box subwoofer and both boxes are equally small !!
@TylerStout4 жыл бұрын
They do, it's just expensive to do it right. In order to have it equal a $5-15 plastic tube or a few more pieces of wood for slot ports like that you need twice the surface area of the main driver so 2x of the original size or 1x of a larger radiator of larger size so for a 12 inch driver you'd need 17 inch passive radiator roughly. Getting a port to not chuff isn't hard biggest issue is keeping the size down as if you compare subs with properly sized ports and boxes they are substantially larger in depth in order to be able to contain the port. The KEF 8" Reference subwoofer is small and has decent cea2010 numbers and uses passive radiators but try not to shit a brick when you see the price. OSD makes some as well but they are equal to subs a couple hundred cheaper than it in performance.

Mine lasted a couple years, when I had a pair back in the day. I’ve definitely read about many amp failures on the forums, over the years though.

Too bad the psu for this sub is filled with the cheapest junk chinese made capacitors on the market and fail badly after only 5 years or so. dont buy this used. I have 7 failed caps on the psu board and 3 more on the preamp board and it takes a lot of work to repair. There are dozens more caps on all 3 boards that just barely pass by the hair on their chinny chin chin. i bought it brand new and its failed on me and i didnt use it that much or push it very hard, never turned the gain /volume up above 25% and left it on auto instead of on all the time. Never buying a powered sub from polk audio ever again if only i knew the circuit boards inside this are filled with cheapest junk Capxon capacitors before i bought it. Congrats Polk audio made yourselves an extra 5 bucks on every sub sold to screw over customers with unreliable products that fail just outside of warranty and congrats on tricking people into buying junk at a $500 price point. Most subs at this price point have quality parts that will last you decades but Polk Audio out there doing work to make sure you get screwed over. If there is anybody as insane as i am about to embark on the quest of fixing this giant cow turd, i will give you the tip that you need to melt in 40% leaded solder into every capacitor connection point to lower the melting point enough that the caps can be removed and work from the back with the board upside down and push them out with the iron on a solder wick to soak up the solder after lowering its melting point. Oh, and some people have found that the Zeener diodes on the boards often fail too. Now you gonna need hundreds of dollars in tools just to find the bad electronic components on the boards. 🖕🖕
