I love that so many people from the younger generations are discovering classic comedies like this one. Also, you said you gave Lily an ‘A’ for effort with her singing. 😂 It takes skill to sing so poorly when you are actually a great singer. Madeline Kahn was a VERY talented singer. She was the voice of Gypsy the moth in the Pixar movie “A Bug’s Life”. I miss her.

I agree. I think that they should react to more classic movies. It seems like they don't like to venture much earlier than the 80's. I can name other movies from the 70's and earlier that are really great movies to react to. I will name a movie from the 50's 60's and 70's that would be great reactor movies. The 50's is The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, the 60's is Cool Hand Luke, and the 70's is Car Wash. If I can get one of these reactors to watch one of those movies it will likely catch on with other subscribers to suggest those movies.

Magy, Actually, Warner Brothers didn’t want to release this movie. Even back then they thought audiences would be very offended and were prepared to eat the entire cost of the movie and let it sit on a shelf. However, Mel Brooks convinced them to have a couple of sneak previews. They went really well so they reconsidered and released the movie.

Yes. The Indian chief was Mel Brooks, the same guy who played the governor. He also wrote the movie and theme song. The language the Indians were speaking was Yiddish, the Jewish dialect of German. The name they kept calling Hedley Lemarr was Hedy, after Hedy Lamarr. She was a famous actress in her day, but more than that, she was a genius. One of her inventions helped the Allies win WWII and was crucial in the development of the internet.

Fun Fact: Mel Brooks, the man who not only wrote and directed this movie but also played Governor William J LaPetomaine in it, said the inspiration for the "beans" scene came from his watching of cowboy movie serials at the local theater every weekend when he was a boy. He said he noticed that, in these western movies, he always saw the cowboys always eating a lot of beans and drinking a lot of coffee. A thought came him that if you eat a lot of beans and drink a lot of coffee, you're not going to be pleasant company in the next 20 minutes. So he decided to being some reality to that scenario in his western. Btw, that scene was responsible for the hardest laughing I've ever heard coming from my late father.

The funny thing is that I watched this movie for the first time just a few days ago! The "enthusiastic bully" with the big smile at the start of the movie looked very familiar to me, and it was driving me crazy. I looked his information up, and it turns out the actor also played the gun salesman in Back to the Future Part 3 (the one who tells Marty that the gun is "so easy that a baby could shoot it", and after Marty shoots all the targets with the gun, asks him "Where'd you learn to shoot like that?" and Marty answers "7/11!") Also, that thing they move along the train track by pumping the handles is called a handcar in English (I don't speak Bulgarian, so I have no idea what it would be called in that language.)

Yep. The nostalgia for a time when “people weren’t as sensitive” is misplaced and not based on reality. That said, there is a tradition of transgressive and edgy work. But it’s important to remember that transgressive comedians took risks and faced consequences. Lenny Bruce was jailed for obscenity. Mel Brooks did indeed face controversy, but but won many people over because his comedy was so good. It’s the same today. If your comedy is weak, you’ll get called out for your shock value transgressions. If it is strong, if the jokes work, you will be accepted, even lauded. The people who pine for the time when they could be openly racist are usually talentless hacks that don’t want to face consequences.

Yeah, there's loads of movies that were "offensive" back then too - off my head is Life of Brian. A major reason this movie holds up and isn't pulled from most online streaming services is because the racists are all the dummies. There's a big difference between the joke itself being bigoted compared to the joke being how bigots are ignorant and foolish.

Well, to tell the family secret, my grandmother was Dutch. ” That's a reverse play on the "One drop rule" where a social and legal principle of racial classification that was prominent in the 20th century United States that asserted any person with even one ancestor of black ancestry ('one drop' of 'black blood') is considered black. Bart was implying that since he had "one drop" of Caucasian blood that he wasn't really black. A subtle yet brilliant joke. 5:55 Have you ever heard "**** you 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒐𝒓𝒔𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒓𝒐𝒅𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒐𝒏"? 15:30 "Indian" Mel Brooks speaking Yiddish and German, and wearing red, white and blue warpaint.

People were offended at the time. The difference was they could also laugh at a joke even if it was offensive. Brooks made sure to make every group both the punchline and the hero.

This supposedly takes place in the 1870's. I believe the "Camptown Ladies" was a song from that time. The song that the black workers sing about " I get no kicks from Champagne" is known as "I Get a Kick Out of You" and is from 1934. The point is to satirize racism b/c the black workers do not sing the 'expected' songs, it's not to be historically accurate.

29:30 That's a lyric from an old 1929 song, "You Do Something to Me," written by Cole Porter. The complete lyrics are: "You do something to me, something that simply mystifies me. Tell me, why should it be you have the pow'r to hypnotize me? Let me live 'neath your spell. Do do that voodoo that you do so well. Oh you do something to me that nobody else can do."

FYI, Bart hitting Taggart over the head with a shovel was not in the original script. Slim Pickens, the actor portraying Taggart insisted the scene be added because he couldn't stand being so awfully mean to black folks and not get some kind of comeuppance somehow. He also needed to be talked into using the n-word by Cleavon Little (Bart) himself because he couldn't bring himself to use it.

Blazing Saddles is my favorite comedy of all-time. You could definitely not make this movie today, but you could barely make this movie in 1974. Mel Brooks had to battle the studios tooth & nail to not get several scenes cut. There'd be nothing left if the studios got their way. Regarding the opening theme, I read that the writer of the song was upset that the movie was a western parody and not a serious western.

As I understand it, someone once brought up this movie with Mel Brooks, about 25 years after it was made, and commented, "That movie's awesome, but you couldn't _possibly_ make a movie like that _nowadays._ Everyone's too sensitive." I don't remember _exactly_ what his reply was, but it was something to the effect that you couldn't really make it in 1974 _either,_ but he got away with it, because every single joke made at the expense of particular groups was made by comic writers _from_ that group; writers who had built their career out of knowing exactly where the _boundary_ was. And to be honest, I think that comes across. That's why this movie is _funny_ without being _offensive._

Magy...Tumble down the Mel Brooks rabbit hole. 'Young Frankenstein', 'History Of The World, Part I', 'The Producers' (both the 1967 and the 2005 musical remake), 'Spaceballs', 'Dracula-Dead And Loving It', 'Robin Hood-Men In Tights', 'High Anxiety'....he made incredible comedies. Harvey Korman (Hedley Lamarr) didn't get an Oscar nomination, but Madeline Kahn (Lily Von Schtupp) did. Part of the reason that he didn't has to do with the screen legend Hedy Lamarr not liking the jokes about her name. She even sued Brooks, he paid her off and still made all of the jokes...and there was a bit of a backlash. Harvey was a major comedic talent, and was a member of the cast of 'The Carol Burnett Show'. Look up some of the skits he did, and he will have you doubled over with laughter...especially if he is teamed with Tim Conway. Comedy GOLD!!!! Yeah, Mel played the Governor, the Sioux Chief, and the film director in line for Hedley's gang...He always shows up in some way in his films. Cleavon Little (Bart) was an incredibly talented actor-singer on Broadway and did a handful of films before he died way too young. Madeline Kahn was a staple in several Mel Brooks films, she was also a trained opera singer...but loved comedy which she excelled at! Slim Pickins (Taggart) was in tons of westerns and is best known today for this film, and Stanley Kubrick's comedy 'Dr. Strangelove ' as Major "King" Kong. Alex Karras (Mongo) was an American NFL Football player for the Detroit Lions before becoming an actor. Another great movie he did was Blake Edwards's musical comedy 'Victor/Victoria' starring Julie Andrews, James Garner, and Robert Preston. They tried to do a TV series after the film's success at the box office...the show failed miserably.

Great reaction... You got more of the jokes and the point of the movie than many people.. especially considering English is not your native language... You definitely figured out the point... to show the stupidity of the closed minded people... but also that they could grow beyond that and learn to be more accepting. Watching it again.. would probably be a good idea.. There are some little hidden parts that are easy to miss. That is true in many of Mel Brookes movies.

This movie is more like a live-action Loony Tunes cartoon (Warner Brothers), with Sheriff Bart being Bugs Bunny. Also, Gene Wilder started writing the script for Young Frankenstein while filming Blazzing Saddles. And another Mel Brooks movie with Gene Wilder is The Producers from 1967.

Notice Gene Wilder holding a popcorn bucket, when he says, " Where u heading?". The woman is master comedian and the great opera singer, Madeline Kahn. Its amazing how good she was at singing bad! She was also in Mel's movie, Young Frankenstein! Mongo is Alex Karras, had a good tv show and was a big time NFL player!! All Mel Brooks movies must be watched! Specially young Frankenstein, Spaceballs! Alsobin this movie, lots of add-lib, and gene wilder and Richard Pryor helped write!😮 The Howard Johnson guy ..of the old Howard Johnson motels!

There was actually a Hollywood actress named Hedy Lamarr in the 1940s and '50s. Hedly's name is a joke, but the actress was not amused. I think she even threatened to take Mel Brooks to court.

Please do some research into the background, theres a lot. Richard Prior actually wrote the dialogue for the white characters and Mel Brooks for the black actors. So many things easily missed... I get no kick" wouldn't be written for at least half a centuar, Gucci saddle and clothes?. Anyway you rock! I'm now a subscriber.
