But he changed his appearance despite being in his physical body. (Shinigami powers are one of the main 4 species powers in Bleach) There's multiple possibilities for how he could do that, like other have said, having control over full bring powers is the most likely. (Full bring is another of the 4 main species powers in Bleach). So he already has at minimum control over 2 of the main species powers. He can even open gates directly to hell with his hands (which we only saw Shinigami being able to do with their Spiritual Swords) and absorb Pieces of Soul King Yhwach (which honestly I don't even know if other characters can even do that. Maybe top tier characters)
