By far the most useful channel I've found while working on my son's first car/Jeep. Every day I find a useful video on your channel. Just changed my son's old dryrotted speakers out in his door panels and his tailgate (haven't found any 3.5 inch ones for his front panel yet). And was about to start installing the stereo only to find that it was missing the original harness and a hardwire was going to be necessary. Thanks a lot for the prep help to keep me sane.

Once the interior looks manageable, i want to remove the ashtray underneath the AC control box and put in a rocker switch panel... Will that have to be custom or do you know of any products that already exist for that spot?

I dont know of any but they do make some 97+ ones for the console area although it's easy to make your own.

I have a 1990 Laredo like (I believe) the Zombie Jeep and Clutchfield sells a wiring harness adapter and map for all the wire colors. Pretty easy install, thanks for showing this Matt!

Awesome video! For anyone doing a stereo swap on their XJ or MJ, I'd strongly recommend picking up the factory adapter. Makes for a cleaner, easier install. I buy mine at walmart for $5-10. Also, don't be sad if you open up your jeep and the wiring colors don't match any of the documentation you can find. Not only did they change the wiring colors every year, it seems like they often used whatever wire was available for some trucks.

I'm not mechanically scarred at all I've done several customs builds frame up mods and restorations I do love watching your Jeep videos though you show the right way to do things. After watching this I went and did the San eput in a CD player and wish I could show you a picture ran into a problem that explains some issues most wires behind the dash are melted together and exposed and nasty. Yay dash removal and rewire time from what I could see 2 feet of wire is melted, charred and or exposed yay. Guess I'll dive in and remove the dash and replace all of that. Yehaw!🤠

I have a '93 jeep yj, and found that jeep original radio harness plug. Plugged it in and connected same color wire to same color other wire. It worked till I soldered the connections and stuffed it back in. worked fine for 20 seconds. then out it went. The yellow wire did not have power (with engine running). Think I blew a fuse. I'll check it tomorrow. Good, inforative video. Thanks - from 2020.

This helped me out a lot! My friend and I are trying to install an older stereo he has laying around on his 88 Comanche. The only issue is that the previous owner was an idiot and cut the wires going to the door speakers so we'll have to figure out something there, but there are already wholes in the doors to accommodate the speakers at least.

If you're working on a cherokee, the wires going to the driver door are notorious for going bad in the door trunk... you're better off fishing new speaker wire, using 16ga, and only use the 12v ignition, constant and ground out of that harness. Also, it's a good idea to wire up a loom of wire to the remote amp turn-on and a long pair of RCAs, and zip tie them in the glove box... that way you don't have to take the stereo out when you go to install a small sub/amp...

Hey man. Love the video. I just bought a Comanche, and I love it. There's an issue with the radio randomly turning on and off. I can't tell if it's the radio itself, or the maybe the current not reaching the radio consistently. Is this a common problem?

jus finished doing this on my 98 4.0 laredo 2wd and it sucked soo bad because my wiring adapter didn't have a ground wire (Scosche)...so i had to splice a new and longer black ground wire to the old short one and add a fork looking spade connector, afterwards i tucked it under a screw on the metal chassis of the new stereo..smh soo annoying..btw please make a video for installing new stereos in the door panel !!

That as well as which wire is positive and negative , how do u handle using the existing wiring harness with an after market coaxial speaker, do u splice and solder, or do u use butt connector s and crimp... Stuff like that

@l337pwnage11 жыл бұрын
Can't add much to that, pretty complete. I would do the fitment before the wiring, though, just in case you end up with, for some reason, a situation where you aren't able to get it to fit or aren't happy with the way it fits. Wiring harness adapters are nice if you are going to use stock wiring. Also, when crimping you can stagger the crimps and you will end up with less of a big ball of crimps in one spot. Additionally, if you solder and shrink wrap, the connections are also much more compact. That is nice that you could use the stock mount, that is always preferable as most aftermarket mounts are cheap plastic and easier to break and steal the stereo. If it is your vehicle and you plan on keeping it a long time, you could always use one of those cheap label makers to label the wiring. /watch?v=QjQNrUSR2PU Then you'd be set for future stereo work.

It's a bit late, but don't splice the radio harness to the car harness. Splice a 2-plug Mopar CAR harness plug (either from a salvage yard or new) that fits Metra 70-1817 to the car side. That way, you don't have to cut and splice the car again to install a different radio.

After the install, my radio shuts off when the engine shuts off, and also going from power on, to engine start. Any ideas on how to set it so that the radio stays on?
@thomasraven11 жыл бұрын
Most car stereos are wired to accessory power, so the ignition cylinder has to be in the accessory-on position before power goes to the radio. When cranking, the accessories are often temporarily shut off so all the juice can go toward starting the car. If you want the stereo to always have power, you'll have to run a new set of DC 12V power wires straight to the battery. Be sure to put a fuse in the positive line to protect your radio and be careful not to leave it on and drain your battery.
