If you do not know why the new auto smooth was added, then your 3D knowledge is still limited. It's for exporting correct normals to external software, which was an issue. The way Blender used to tell external software that an edge is sharp was by splitting the edge. If you would like to confirm that, try adding a cube, exporting it as a glb, and then importing it again. You will notice that with the old auto smooth approach, the edges are split. But if you shade it smooth, the edges will remain connected.

This makes total sense. I usually do my retopology in Blender, and when I was trying to bake some normal maps in Zbrush, I had the strangest baking errors (I was swapping meshes between the software using a .fbx file). After some research I check my vertex normals in the viewport overlay and everything is as way out of wack. I got to admit, the new method of smoothing normals seems convoluted, but if this is a step towards it being more interoperable with other software then I’m all for it.

@@amesmedia4447 this makes a total of 0 sense. let me explain what they fked up here exactly... previously all you had to do was put auto smooth on and then you continue modelling, adding bevels, whatever... then in the end right before you export, you apply sharps and/or do edge split. thats it. it allowed for easy hassle free non-destructive workflow without having to constantly massage your modifier list, or your prostate, or what have you. well good luck with that in 4.1 now... good thing we have addons that fix 'new and improved' behavior

@PonteRyuurrui Hey. Speaking of add-ons, does Boxcutter work with Blender 4.1? Every time i press enter or mouse click to confirm the cut it just goes away and say canceled. Also the black dot in the center of the shape that you drag the box down with is gone. Am I forgetting some setting? or is there a bug? Iv looked all over and cant find what to do.

I stayed with the previous version because of that since I do scult, shade smouth and real cancer for body type meshes with the new model. Before I needed a click, half a second, now, half an hour and necessary to adjust the smouth to be able to sculpt by applying edges on the mesh.

Why so much hate? The traditional Auto-smooth still exists and has just been renamed to "Smooth by angle". The new Auto-Smooth modifier gives much more control. People should get the correct information before complaining

You can be sure that Ponte knows what he is talking about lol. They are not the same. Smooth by angle adds sharp edges to the object, which you can easily try it with a default cube of your own. Apply Smooth by Angle and extrude one of the faces, watch what happens.

I agree, the new modifier is only adding options to use with autosmooth. its opening up the use and settings used. why thats a BAD thing has got me.

​@@buraktabakoglu In this case there is no reason to use smooth by angle if you dont want sharp edges automatically marked. The modifier offers better control as it can be freely stacked with others modifiers

If you guys actually read, i'm only saying that they are NOT the same. Which makes the second quote even more stupid... The traditional autosmooth does NOT exist anymore. It is gone. As far as i'm concerned, it shouldn't even be named "Smooth by Angle" in the first place but instead Mark Sharp Edges by Angle or something like that. Yeah i agree, people actually should get the correct information. Before spreading misinformation.

Whats "BAD" about it is that it is going to make certain workflows for some people much more time consuming and tedious. Previously you had to just apply autosmooth once and forget about it. Now you need to constantly deal with extra modifiers just to shade your mesh properly, moving them up and down. If you don't like to do that, you better assign a shortcut to "Mark Sharp" to manually mark your edges sharp and just use Shade Smooth instead. Because Shade smooth is also acting differently at 4.1, it now shades sharp edges actually sharp. At 4.0.2 it was shading the entire mesh smooth, ignoring the sharp edges completely. 4.1 already messed up one of my projects previously created with 4.0.2, by adding AutoSmooth modifiers to hundreds of props, when i reverted back to 4.0.2, all props were shaded Smooth, not AutoSmooth... So beware when saving your previously created projects with 4.1.

This change fixed the issue where you need to have auto-smooth on to be able have custom normals. If you're using weighted normals, you don't need auto smooth at all AFAIK, it just gets overwritten. Did you bring up your concerns about this on the devtalk forums or some other official feedback channel before they made the change? This was one of the first changes they made for 4.1. IIRC it might have even been originally slated for 4.0.

funny enough as for me being someone who's just switching to blender from other programs and was starring to learn 3d from 3dsmax maaaany years ago the "new" auto smooth workflow makes a lot more sense then the old one

Hmm, that seems needlessly complicated. I get that they're trying to streamline everything to work with geometry nodes, but I feel like they're alienating most of their user base with these changes.

I didn't get the disaster. I am working with new autosmooth and I think It is much better to be added at modifier level. Muuuch better. It adds automatically after right click. What is the issue to add one more option? It seems a video to promote hard ops, to be honest.

It is either all or nothing on sharp edges. Meaning most likely you need two modifiers if you are using sharp edges. If that even works.

In 4.0 i had problem with Follow by active quads In UV that it makes farthest quads deformed from active quads and some projects I worked were made bad made and I hope I will not have problems because of it in future. Currently using ZEN UV and life never been easier.

After updating to 4.1 I have "Unassigned / Auto Smooth" modifier. It's also in Geometry Nodes window. I don't really have a full understanding of this.

The Autosmooth modifier is a modifier created *with* geometry nodes. This is a feature that was added in 4.0 to allow creators to make geometry node setups that can be applied as modifiers or tools directly instead of needing to find a geometry node setup and applying it separately. There's a few benefits to that (specifically, geometry node-based modifiers and tools) on principle as it can help with the workflow. In this case, however, it kind of ruins the workflow.

rofl, first they changed perfectly functional modifier popup list that was VISUALLY split into logical groups and had memorable icons to a stupid search + submenu category crap in 4.0, and now this? well, it's back to 3.6 for me, looks like they're dead set on killing ergonomics for 3d modellers

@@Denomote A thousand times? Having to move your hands back and forth between the mouse and the keyboard is never a plus. Also, for some people, the visual 'where do I click?' makes more sense than the verbal 'what was that called again?' different brain parts. @ekshalibur gumroad has a couple *free* addons that bring back the old modifier menu. Blendermarket may have them, too, but might be free only if you've bought from them before. No reason to switch back.

As someone who has NEVER used Auto Smooth cuz it more often than not made my work WORSE and more tedious, this is actually a welcome change Now it can autoset sharp edges for me and I can actually edit them later if I need to to make the smoothing exactly as I need it to without having to resort to tedious sharp edge marking with Edge Split In all seriousness why do so many want old Autosmooth Unless your model has perfect 90d angles everywhere and smooth transitions on angled surfaces it only makes the work tedious and unfun to deal with Or you had copious amounts of luck that your models didn't need any finer control over smoothness

Oh crap, Blender pulled a Microsoft and made changes, that nobody asked for and do not improve the experience....... Seems like coincidently it is a good decision, that I decided to stick to 3.5 for while now. Because these times, I am working a lot with this "classic" auto smooth workflow and I couldn't be assed to keep doing, what you showed there. It makes no sense, it is cluttered, and I am sure they will change it back. But it shows you: When you really like a version of a program, it can be beneficial to NOT upgrade unless those updates add crucial functionality. Blender 4.0 certainly added many cool things, but none that are important to me personally, which is why I may still stick to 3.5 until 4.5 is out there.

the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6 is good because there are ony improvements and new features added. Nothing changed. Also, the best thing about blender 4.0 and onwards is the AGX transform, which can be added in 3.6 as well.

I feel like an idiot, not sure I understand fully. So the problem is having to manage this "Smooth by Angle" modifier? If so maybe the devs could add a toggle option to keep certain modifiers always on the bottom or top.

Honestly, I found the changes weird but you get used to It in the same way as you got used to the old workflow in the first place. The only thing that annoys me a little is The "Shade Smooth by Angle" operator, I'd much rather it just added the modifier they built themselves set to the angle than this thing of marking the model's edges and calling it a day.

I agree this new autosmooth in modifier is sooo annoying, i already use alot of different modifiers on my scenes, i dont want to be lost by adding a new modifier everytime when i didnt had to before, now im afraid it will mess with my workflow And the new modifier menu is annoying too

Infrastructurally autosmooth was a code debt nightmare and existed as a bizarre edge case outside the modifier stack. The new smoothing code is basically autosmooth by default when it detects sharp data, tagging which edges to make sharp has been moved to geometry nodes to be future proofed. Sometimes the pursuit of better software means making controversial changes. Without making controversial changes blender would be still stuck in the 2.49x days.

@@slavsit7600 Yup, but I agree this brings up an issue that the insertion point of new modifiers sometimes shouldnt be always at the end of the stack. Maybe a "stack cursor" would be a good fix. I do also find it strange that the object mode operator makes mesh level changes. Maybe it should be changed to add to the end or edit the last smooth by angle modifier on the stack.

There's an addon to bring back the old menu. I think it's free as well. Don't know if it's gonna work with 4.1, but it works with 4.0

Is mostly a case of "change rejection", I agree by the way, I liked the old one better, but I'm aware that is mostly because by that point I've had spend years with the old one so I got use to it.

Removing autosmooth was proposed almost 3 years ago. A number of people explained why it would be an issue. Im staying on 3.6lts for now.

Thanks Ponte, You are always on the front line. I'll stay in Blender 4 too. With Blender 4.1, Boxcutter's Lazorcut also no longer works. Try to create a cut in space, with lazorcut set for example to 0.3mm: disaster. Furthermore, solids are no longer cutted to the depth set in lazorcut.

Just wait for addon updates. Every time a new version comes out a lot of people say stuff like this, but at the end, it's just because you got used to some of the things, and since you have to learn those bits again, it makes your brain think it's a bad thing. It's like making a pizza, and since you have always used bad flour, when you use the good one it bakes terribly with the old settings, and you stop making pizza with good flour. That mindset is just wrong...

Well, I think autosmooth created a consistency error/problem, well meant but bad execution. Programming is very ridged from time to time. Seriously chaotic at others. And between those, it oscillates at the wims of the management. I have spent a weekend creating and testing management windows that directly manipulated the database of an application against all our well intended advise that those screens could have inadvertent effects on the integrity of the database. 24 hours of double pay for a team of 6 later, they were unceremoniously removed, including the idiot that "needed" them to be built. Same problem here. A problem was addressed at short notice, creating a modifier via a backdoor option that was cool and gave the desired result simplifying matters. But at the expense of clarity of workflow. Pragmatic solution. Now, the hardliners (or a single hardliner) is/are at the wheel (don't underestimate the whoes of office politics in the, oh so outspoken, Dutch office culture, where bullying is a serious problem on all levels of the office pyramid). more like one step forward, one step backward. The new GPU accelarated openimagedenoiser is very good and I'd love to update, but this one just literally ruins like 20 blender projects for me, so I can't update

I've been using Blender for many years and I really admire the way they're taking the development of the software forward, and to this day I find it incredible that the software is free. But, despite my appreciation, I have to confess that this update didn't satisfy me at all. Obviously, this doesn't cancel out all the other amazing features that have been implemented in version 4.1, but it is clear that there is a lot of dissatisfaction, especially on the part of modelers, with the impracticality of this new way of working. I believe that, especially as Blender is a largely community-driven project, this could change to a better solution very soon. I've read here somewhere that the developers are doing this only so that they have to correct it later, purely for marketing reasons, and that the course of Blender's development is going in the wrong direction, but I don't see why Blender Foundation, a non-profit organization, would do this and nor do I believe that this mistake will deeply compromise the quality of the software. I believe that this will be repaired soon, and hopefully if the community speaks out about it, which I definitely think it's going to eventually happen, the developers will pay attention to this issue.

Its kinda crazy that the devs dont realize literally every beginner modelling tutorial just became redundant.. and is going to confuse new users now. When the tutorial says rightclick autosmooth but they see smooth-by-angle and get a different behavior. I put in a "workflow regression" bug report months ago, it was tagged as high priority by mods and it was ignored by devs

People always bitch without looking at the reason why. Some already stated it on the comment section so hopefully blender ignores these clowns. Modifiers should have a way to mark the place of items in the stack though

Is many possibilities ways to include it in Blender, but this is the most worst way how they could do this, if you work only in blender they could make option (auto smooth) and (define smooth edges) include in fast menu without special modifiers, and they could add adnotation how controls shades on geometry edges

Blender devs don't sometimes have any idea why some things should be done certain way - this is one of those things. I fear they won't ever get rigging related stuff and animation data in better shape because of this. Smoothing is so elemental part of mesh data that it definitely shouldn't only be a modifier only solution. And I personally hate to see modifiers in outliner for "clean" meshes.

Some people like it, so the rest has to stop complaining. This is how the reaction is. Some people say complaining will piss of developers, or its an improvement so stop talk about other software. Or my favorite: I don’t do modeling, so I think its a really good change. The bigger problem is that the community is acting totally devoted. That causes a problem, as the relationship between developers and users completely vaporized in the past years. That did happen to every 3d product in the last 25 years and the only rescue was always a product manager who focused on the needs of the clients. Well, here you see the future of Blender, no clients, no product care, no bug fixing for years (in certain areas) and we back to the comments of short term hired developers of 2.8…

I've been using blender for about a year, coming from Softimage and maya, i think that blender does a lot of things great but on other things they are trying to reinvent the wheel and end in a mess.

Man, blender, what the hell are you doing? If it ain't broke, don't fix it! How it's twice as confusing with auto smooth in 4.1! Thank goodness for hard ops/Boxcutter. Also, I agree that the modifier tab is ass! They did a really good job with the rigging tab in 4.1, though I give that.

Maybe this wouldn't happen in the Blender Foundation actually focused on real updates instead of just cramming whatever changes they can think up into the software to justify another x.1 release for marketing reasons. We seriously don't need Blender getting 3 incremental updates every single year, especially for a software with a legacy of making big, impactful updates less frequently. But instead we need our tri-annual release to keep up the news cycle so Blender stays on the front page of every CG news site so it's all hands on deck, imagine any changes possible so we can have enough changes to justify an update. Finish god damn finish Eevee Next? No way, takes too long, need to get 4.1 out NOW.

Yeah i hope you didn't save any of your projects with 4.1 because it messes it up by adding AutoSmooth modifiers to all your previously Autosmoothed objects. When you go back and open it up with 4.0.2, they are all shaded smooth. Not Autosmooth.

But modeling hell nah, its 10% creative proces 90% figuring out topology mergin points completley machine task, realy boring. Thats why i prefer sculpting and editing scans than build model from scratch, okay with people who love build models, but ai will make this stuff faster and better soon.

@@Stanisslayer Personally I find topology enjoyable. It's like a puzzle and can be therapeutic. Also I think it's simply best to have knowledge of topology before we allow AI to take over every skill.
