Very good tutorial. I humbly want to add the concept that the squares of the texture can just be single pixels instead of 32x32 as you can set your islands to be much smaller than a pixel. This saves a bit on the file-size and video memory used by the texture.

Cool technique Jay. Reminds me of the approach taken in voxel apps like Magicavoxel. Very simple but effective texturing.

Yes absolutely, for low poly it's THE technique. Thanks for your comment.

I'm following your advice on the color palette. I'm using a mix of Blender and ProBuilder (Unity). How do you set up the texture/material in Unity to match the Blender setup? Mine is getting stretched and maybe getting slightly wrong colors in Unity. I'm using the google material design palette. Also if you're interested, it would be really cool if you'd do a small series on ProBuilder/ProCore and how you approach it. I think lots of people will enjoy it.

Is there a reason why you used texturing instead of adding Diffuse Materials?
@JayAnAm6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the more materials you have, the more drawcalls you have, the worse the performance will be in your game. This is why I want to use just one material for all objects.

wonderful tutorial! just curious on the uv'ing, it seems like you just kind of stack and significantly shrink the uv's does this not have any effects on lightmap in a game engine like ue4?
@JayAnAm7 жыл бұрын
When baking lights you need to increase the lightmap resolution, great that you mentioned this, I will point this out in one of my next tutorials.
@digitaldope62475 жыл бұрын
is there a reason you don't just add a colored material for each object?
@JayAnAm5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I want to use the models in a games (e.g. mobile games) and each materail you add results in one more drawcall in your game (-> bad performance)

please explain more how to do the texturing because I dont know what to do. I just made a picture with color squares
@xbgt40227 жыл бұрын
I have no idea why, but that method with texturing is not working for me. I render in cycles, I added material and texture but when I make U > Unwrap, then scale it to the single color, nothing happens.
@xbgt40227 жыл бұрын
Ok now it's working, I had to change color to Texture Image in material.

Are the tree leaves all just 1 color grade. Or were some of the faces changed to different tones of green? (out of the 3 on the palette)

Sorry to comment on an old video, but I have been using this process to texture for a while and came across an issue (I think). If I am in edit mode and I add a mesh to my model, I can't UV Unwrap / Reset the UVs. In the UV/Image Editor window pane, the UVs are white instead of orange, and I cannot resize or move them over the texture. I'm super new to blender so maybe this is just how things are, but if you have a solution to this I would love to hear it. Right now I just add new pieces in Object mode to avoid this problem. Thanks!
@JayAnAm6 жыл бұрын
Is the mesh a new object that you add in object mode? If so, you first have to assign the material to new object, then go to edit mode and Reset the UVs for this.
@thanajon6 жыл бұрын
No, this is a new mesh that I add with shift-a while in edit mode. i.imgur.com/EeP7HOY.png If you look at the bottom right panel, that's my UV/Image Editor with a simple texture. The small orange pieces are the main model, the white square around the whole texture is the UVs for the added cube. I want to resize and move UVs like the others, but I can't. I guess the way around this is just add meshes in object mode.
