On a desolate island, suicidal sheep Franck meets his fate in a quirky salesman, who offers him the gift of a lifetime. Little does he know that he can only handle so much lifetime. (Target audience age: 13+)
"Cosmos Laundromat" started in 2014 as an experimental feature film, in which an adventurous and absurdist love story is being told by multiple teams - each working in their own unique style. The opening of the film, the 10 minutes pilot "First Cycle", has been made in the Netherlands by the studio of Blender Institute in Amsterdam.
The film itself and all of the artwork files were made with free/open source software and are available under a permissive license. Free to share, free to remix and free to learn from.

Yeah I saw it in Netflix and I'm confused as fuck.. It came out in 2015 and I was like where the fuck is the next episode and I Google it and in 2015 they said it was going to be a full length movie then never posted anything about it again.. Is this it? Are they going to complete it? If not why put it on Netflix under new premier.. I'm so confused.

As someone who tryed to commit suicide long time ago, this really got into me, i can say it touched my soul, i even didn't notice i started crying when Frank was being taken given another oportunity. I just find myself involved in too many feelings, maybe i just feel guilty for trying such a thing, but damn... sometimes everything goes wrong for so long in a row, it's like, i just need a breath... and watching Frank starting to fly all over the colors, just felt like that breath he needed. The breath i needed... and eventually got, sometimes the battle comes back, but remember there is always who feels blessed by having you by your side. Never give up my friends, and always give a hand to who may need it, after all, we are all trapped in this tiny sphere called earth, lets be nicer to each other. Magnificent film, i just loved it. Another one trully that has inspired me more into learning Blender. Thanks for the breath, thanks for the encouragement.

I'm glad you won through your crisis. I seriously considered suicide while a teen, then decades later talked a friend out of it. It can be difficult to convey the intensity of mental pain that drives such despair... and the nearly unspeakable relief of realizing that in the end that's NOT what you want. I remember being ashamed at what I saw as my weakness in contemplating ending my own life, and later feeling humbled at my own strength in turning away from that act. I wish you well on your journey.

Having that perception from a video, is really something to worry about, i just hope you are not a father or i would have to call social services to deal with you. Already got your living state so we will be in touch. This is a classic Republican behaviour.

Been there as well for the first time at age 19 or 20, @Coding Billy, but hadn't proceeded to actually giving it a resolved go (2nd time in 2009 and in the more recent past at least once every week). Maybe what prompted my comment on this film is how the makers of it refrained from openly ridiculing Franck as well as refraining from boilerplate judgement, that tugged at my heart strings....(and like you said yourself, life, people can really serve you a barrage of adversity which then often falls onto already existing vulnerabilities incurred while growing up or other injuries incurred throughout life... which then get you to the point of feeling so overwhelmed that ending it seems like the only "solution"...). I also feel a lot of sympathy for Franck's character and the way that "Victor | Hector" approaches him when he finds him. I will admit though that a hearty chuckle rang out of my chest when hearing Franck's disgruntled complaint in the end "uh, it took me ages to tie that rope.... with my fucking hooves..." ROAR, too funny.... 😂😇. (but I'm not seeing him or anyone arriving in this place as "losers" or "cowards" or whatever else cruel judgements people are quick to issue.... Sometimes it simply gets too much to endure or overcome or cut through...a change of perspective can greatly help in that situation and sometimes has to come from "outside" . I agree that many of us would never have to get to this point of even considering it, if we all cared to treat each other just a tad bit nicer, where we can. And that doesn't even require big things, just doing without the constant competition and bias and admonition we so often come at each other with (myself included as much as it pains me to admit) I'd really love to see the story develop further from here so we might get to witness Franck's adventures and maybe transition and eventually and hopefully new insights earned and gained from those adventures in totally different worlds. I think it's a great story already and it'd be too bad if it couldn't find the resources to continue....

I know it may sound cliche to say, friend, but try Jesus. He is much more than all we've just watched. He sees and understands the pain and promises eternal life with Him in a place far better than Frank could ever experience...the greatest part is, it's no short. It is a real eternal life with Jesus. In your quiet moments at night, look up toward Heaven and say this - Jesus! Are you there? I need you! I'm a sinner who is lost without a Savior. I feel good sometimes, but at times lost. I feel hope sometimes but often times hopeless. Jesus! I've heard about you. Please speak to me... My friend, He will. 😊 ❤❤❤

This is what I wish adult and children's animation should be: atmospherical and immersive with beautiful stunning animation with original storytelling and most of all....passion put into it. Not desperate attemots to grab your child's attention every five seconds with loud and obnoxious noises and characters, not shock or juvenile humor to attempt to make a grown up laugh but pure immersive story telling. While sure this is just an experiment and the story is quite peculiar it certainly has more potential than most animation studios now and days.

“Project Gooseberry” For those who don’t know, a gooseberry is a plant that, when ripe, sheds a shriveled old membrane to expose a semi sweet and vibrant orange berry. I could see how that relates to the film.

Maybe I'm wrong and maybe it's a cliche reveal, but the fact that frank turned into a different species during this first cycle, for me implicates that he will have many more cycles, since Victor states that he is an adventurer and clearly knows Frank from somewhere, also the "you're like me" dialogue. I can see it either being that Frank eventually ends up as human, and Victor is his son, or in some way or another, he ends up being Victor, both would go very well with the gooseberry analogy. A shedding of the shriveled old membrane to expose a vibrant orange haired berry.

The other blender projects were visually stunning, if you consider that they were made using only open source software, but this one is something completely different. The character design is appealing and seems pretty independant and not like another attemp to emulate pixar. The whole fur, composition, lighting isn't just stunning for an open source software, it's stunning for a CG animation. And the story seems great till now, I'm more than curious to see the rest of it.

Beautiful, Stunning, Amazing, Fantastic. To all of us who have studied Blender and believed in Blender over the years, this film proves that our faith has been justified. But for those who see truly long-term, and are committed to Blender, we know that this is just the beginning. Blender gives to us the power to share not only imagination, but vision. Blender "gives" us the power to communicate at last, otherwise we could not afford the technology. Its just a matter of time now. Peace and THANKS.

@laurel8831
@laurel8831 9 жыл бұрын
quasarpuffs Sure. But sharing reels and short films inspires people to use blender. It is the best way to advertise Blender - to call attention on it. The more people know blender the better. Because it is open source it increases the chance that more people help developing. Furthermore blender is free, so you can't really say other software is "better". It depends on the reason for using. I think it's just great to see what is already possible in Blender and the result can certainly compete with every other 3D software. Blender is the epitome of a never ending progress.
@quasarpuffs
@quasarpuffs 9 жыл бұрын
Joshua Rage Oh, I think you might've misunderstood me. I wasn't trying to say that other software is better than Blender, just that- generally speaking- when software improves, it lets artists be more creative. And Blender has definitely improved a lot. Its gone from being a weird, largely-useless toy ten years ago, to a serious 3D creation tool today.
@BlooAlien
@BlooAlien 9 жыл бұрын
quasarpuffs Actually, that "weird, largely-useless toy" was an in-house rendering program being quite heavily used by the folk who had access to it, and it was designed such that they could efficiently get 3D thrown together with a minimum of fuss compared to other programs of the era. It was also crazy mad customizable, so that each artist could basically turn it into THEIR perfect working environment. The problem was that MOST folk around that time could not wrap their brains around the concept of "customizable", let alone customizable interfaces. The other problem for a lotta folk was the interface worked best with one hand on the mouse and one hand working the hotkeys, but most folk seem to think the keyboard is only for cavemen to bash on (obsolete old tech) or for typing letters and Facebook posts. What has happened to that "wierd … toy" over the years is that they've streamlined and modernized the interface while still keeping EVERYTHING that made the original so epic and awesome, and they've continued to add NEW features and improve existing ones, too. Blender has surpassed by far the $2000 Lightwave3D that I used to use, and at this point I'll never switch back. If ever I throw a pile of money at a 3D program again, I'd rather donate it to the Blender Foundation.
@quasarpuffs
@quasarpuffs 9 жыл бұрын
Bloo Alien I think I'm referring to an earlier time in blender's history than what you're talking about. It may have been longer than 10 years ago- I don't recall exactly- but the first time I used blender, it had an unusable joke of a renderer, almost no animation tools, almost no modeling tools, awful non-standard hotkeys, and no undo. It did have the snappy, customizable interface which I've always liked, but that's about it. After the foundation raised the money to take it open source though (I donated a large sum to that effort), it improved a lot, but only to a point. That's why they re-wrote it from scratch 5 years ago... But yeah, ever since then its been kicking ass. I use it for most of my work these days and hardly ever touch my old copies of Maya, LW, etc. that I paid through the nose for.

YEEAAAHH !!! start very compelling. Congratulations to all the team of Blender. I really love the story, this deserves to be known worldwide, Esther Wouda did an excellent job, I like animations are made not only for children. The quality is excellent, where I work use Maya, but my boss is putting together a team to use Blender. A hug to all those who worked.

I first saw this short in 2016/2017, and over the years have repeatedly come back to watch it again. The animation and storytelling are phenomenal. And it's been an amazing long term gauge of my mental health. When I first watched this, I was overwhelmed with emotion by the end. It hit too close to home with my desires at the time. But now, there's a fondness for this short, and a connection with Franck as he enters his new life. For everyone else who keeps coming back to this, me too... me too. Waiting for the next cycle, probably forever. And to those just finding this, and Franck is a little too relatable, Keep going, something will change, and it gets so much more beautiful when it does.

Amazing! This animation depicts the truth which is understood by very few. Sheeps follow each other but that one sheep was the seeker, for more or beyond what he was living in. His world was a tiny island. This is just like our world where every living being is following the same path told by society to earn money, eat, sleep, drink and die. So sheep represent people here. Then an angel or prophet comes out of this world like we know in every religion mentioned. He gives the knowledge of truth to the one who agrees to listen and surrender to him. That knowledge is self explanatory and does not require any expertise in any subjects or language or education. Thus the sheep is confused at first but the knowledge slowly takes it hold and takes the sheep to enlightenment which is represented by the colourful clouds and tunnel of light replicating the experiences of deep meditation. Then further the sheep is born again in another body but this time he has the collar means he is now enlightened and already understands the truth. The angel is not bound to the limitations of the world so after the job is done he leaves that universe. In angels dimension, we can see many many universes as we know in Indian scriptures its mentioned that there are millions of universes and the one who is enlightened is beyond these universes. So then angel hears another call of the true seeker and runs to attend it. One more thing, here the angels look is similar to Jesus as I think the director of the movie may have evolved with Christian belief. But as the truth is one it is mentioned same in all religions, this story holds true for all. The people who follow religion blindly fail to understand this. Beautiful stuff!! Hats off! I did not know Blender was capable of such animations and open source ... :O

I’m talkin the type of tears where your nose is runny and you’re sniffing in and out and losing breath type of crying. Idk what it is, they did such s great job putting life into that sheep... he didn’t even have to talk, and I would have cried the same way just seeing him run away... the whole suicide intro is deep, and perfect for this. So sad it isn’t a full movie I’m considering writing a visual novel of my own just to bring piece of mind to myself lol

The graphics is superb. Seriously, Blender is now really good enough for Hollywood movies. But what impressed me more was the film's direction. There is real art. Congratulations for all those who worked on it. You really accomplishing something.

Thanks to the animation community, I've become fairly skeptical and untrusting towards what I watch. Mainly because around 70% of the animations I've stumbled upon are either sad or really disturbing. When I was watching this I had my brows furrowed while expecting some kind of upsetting ending like Victor killing Franck somehow. Then somewhere in the middle I felt like maybe the whole thing was just some kind of cluster of ideas that someone through together for animation practice. And that it was made more to just make something, rather than to actually have a story. I'm very happy to say that by the end, those feelings were wiped down. And I actually feel pleased to have watched this video. I'm still pretty damn confused. But the film ended in such a way that I do feel like there is a story there. And a nice story. It feels like a Willy Wonka, or a Mr. Magorium's Magic Emporium, sort of thing. Like maybe Victor lives in the world that we do, but with the twist that he owns this magical laundromat. Perhaps using it to travel to new worlds to help people or at least do something. Anyways, I really do like it. I encourage the makers to continue as this has definitely caught my attention and I'm joining those in the comment section who believe that a second installment would be awesome. Good job to the people who worked on this project! It looks amazing!

The story is incredibly, bizarrely beautiful, and the animation is stunning. I imagine this is what you might dream if you were on a super peaceful acid trip, but also had a bit of indigestion...

This short makes me believe that Blender can do wonders. The only problem only happens when one just doesn't try hard enough.
