Glad to see Ton talk about life and his life. Life's too short for regrets. I had a car accident in 2001 that left me a quadriplegic and changed my life forever. I started learning blender around 2.8 and now use it practically every day. You guys are amazing!

Listening to Ton's story hits home quite a bit, I faced a similar life changing experience a few years back when I was diagnosed with a large brain tumor. It really hit me hard and was faced with the prospect on dying young or the risk of becoming incapacitated. It was a big turning point in my life, I stared death in the face and accepted the reality what ever the outcome. By no means was I giving up, instead I used my time to push myself harder to become a better person and a better artist. After brain surgery during my recovery, I focused most of my time on Blender. A year later it was apparent the tumor was starting to grow again, so I then had to endure 9 weeks of daily radical radiotherapy to my brain. It caused a really bad case of radiation sickness, but throughout the course of my treatment, I took on the biggest and most challenging blender project I had ever taken at the time. I modeled a like for like replica of the Linear Accelerator environment that was used in my radio therapy treatment. It took me 9 weeks to complete, aka the duration of my radio therapy treatment and then presented the virtual photo-realistic Linear Accelerator environment to the radiology department at hospital on the final day of my treatment as a gift for them to use as a training aid for staff and future patients. I remember being sick, dizzy, couldn't eat and having severe headaches and falling asleep at my desk, but I kept pushing myself everyday until the job was done. I learned so much about myself and about Blender during that time, and it has really helped shape me as a person and my future as a 3d artist. I am really grateful we have access to these tools, without them I really do not know where I would be.

Sometimes, we do take it for granted of having such a wonderful free-to-use software that can influence a lot of people in the 3D world. I have been insisting to teach Blender in the past few years to my (hundreds of) Digital Animation students while the school tried to convince me to use 3ds Max and Maya, of which they have already paid for the licence. Unfortunately, they couldn't find someone who can teach 3D Animation (like Maya and 3ds Max) with at least a Masters Degree. So, I am the one decided which software to teach. I chose Blender because the students found it easier to deal with and they didn't have to go to the lab to access other 3D software. Thanks again (especially Ton) for having such a wonderful and generous thing in my and countless students' lives.

I‘m with Ton. Because an producer for a software must know the developement. It’s usual that producers in software dev need an computer sience degree. An producer for feature films needs knowledge in film producing, so artist knowledge. Because producers are the interface between engineers or artists to the management. So they need to know both sides.

I completely agree. In our studio our philosophy is that you can feel like you can make a difference in an area but if you don’t speak the language of the production teams, you’re no longer helping. Then It becomes more about your ego and less about the team and the end user. We also don’t let people jump on teams for a few hours out of the day because it’s not fair to the production engineers they need dedicated people. What I love about Ton is that unlike many CEOs he completely understands the needs of his teams. He also is the creative brainchild of blender. Therefore that gives him a unique perspective. He has also stood the test of time. That is something that should be respected and honored. Ton is one of my hero’s because he is a champion in several industries. If he wasn’t blender would not be where it is. For that He gets my deepest respect. Appreciate you Ton

i've been looking at the comments about terminal diseases and near accidents, and my heart goes out to you all. please remember me saying this now, even if you put it off until the last second, remember, god loves you. 'nothing after death' isn't a guarantee, even a leading atheist said he wasn't absolutely sure after a near-death experience, merely that he 'still hoped there wasn't' anything after death. i know you probably don't want to hear this, just remember what i say. it's never too late to ask god for help. i'll be praying for you all in this life and the next.

sir, I bought hp victus gaming laptop (i7 ,16 GB RAM , 4 GB graphics ,512 SSD ,15.6 inch display) 5 days ago but when I added monkey wala object in "object mode" of blender and applied modifier on it with subdivision surface and kept its level 6 and render 2 and applied. After that, I applied build modifier on the same monkey object, after that as soon as I pressed space bar to start the time line, my new laptop started lagging and after that when I brought it back to the laptop shop to tell about the laptop, they said That all laptops lag like this and further said, ask an experienced person, now in my view you are my experienced person, so now you tell me what should I do next.

People who want to manage a dev team without tech experience are a bit delusional, and why many teams are inefficient and lot's of companies fail.
@MechNominal
@MechNominal 9 ай бұрын
For a role like that often the only way to get experience is to you know... work with the devs. Almost every producer I've had didn't have the exact expertise in my skillset but a general understanding of what's going on... they would never be reviewing the code so to speak, and I would honestly find that insane. They still made it work. It's not delusional to want to learn and expand your skillset.
@edh615
@edh615 9 ай бұрын
@@MechNominal "It's not delusional to want to learn and expand your skillset" who said that? You converted my point into being against the most general thing possible, learning. You get experience managing developers, you know, working in teams as a developer, this is a position in charge of blenders main code for Christ's sake.

her reasoning is gibberish-speak, just feeling the room for what the other person wants to hear without saying anything specific, "just smile and laugh and gesticulate a lot" (pay attention to her gestures, they say a lot more). manipulative like a politician. seems like a plant. oh and how happy the GN developer looks when she talks about, to paraphrase, putting a straight-jacket on him about anything work-related he wants to talk about or do. she's got him in her pocket already.
