AC is one of those games that keeps running even if you aren't playing. Isabelle is the assistant mayor who is "in charge" while the game is turned off. Generally if you don't play for a long time, like a month or so, you'll come back to find the place is a mess.

Well, to be more accurate it doesn't really run when you're not playing, it's more like it compares the current date to the last time it was saved and calculates whatever changes would have happened.

Why would anyone recommend this to you before they knew if YOU knew what Animal Crossing was, first? At the very least, the request should have come with that as a question, to start with.
