My idea for the challenge was to create a kind of tapestry of sound. I play four notes with four fingers and whenever I feel confident enough, I switch to a new tone field with one finger and work my way through my 18 notes. I had no idea how insecure I would feel. Before, I actually had the feeling that I already knew my handpan very well, but when I couldn't see the tone fields, I felt really anxious and just felt my way around. Then I realised that it really bothers me when I can't really hit the notes and I don't like the sound of just metal at all. Nevertheless, I somehow got into a flow that was actually very meditative, which was probably because I wasn't playing a complicated rhythm or a specific melody, I was paying more attention to loud and soft and the quality of the sound. It was a real experience and it made me think of Stevie Wonder, who can sing so incredibly beautiful, perhaps because he is not distracted by sight and can hear much more than us sighted people.
