After watching this movie multiple times you notice a lot of things the probing questions to Chris about his health and physical activity, the fact that Chris's girlfriend was looking through the reflection of the glass at other black men to target in the future. In order to save himself from slavery/bondage he had to pick cotton, and even more interesting the scene with the cop...she defended Chris because if the cop put his license information in the system it would have left a paper trail for someone to follow.

Their comments on her being hypnotized and possibly not responsible due to her upbringing remind me of an interview. The actress actually commented on that particular view in an interview supposedly, some white peoples were unable to believe her character was just evil and wasn't hypnotized at all her, trophies in the photo frames behind her are proof. I'm, sure she made a statement commenting on how white people (her words) just couldn't, and still can't, believe her character was in fact extremely evil.

You guys noticed the prevalence of the deer symbolism but had a hard time figuring out its relevance. It is connected to slavery. “Buck” and “doe” were animalistic terms used for enslaved people. Abductors would refer to them by these terms when selling them, communicating with other enslavers in the market, catching and trafficking runaways, and really enslaved men and women in general. This dehumanization of Black people further justified treating them as livestock. A staple part of chattel slavery. Like the deer Chris hit, his mother was also left to die. Kind of like a “good riddance.” This is again referred back to when Chris used the deer head to fight back and decided to go back to save the possessed maid. He couldn’t accept the guilt of simply leaving her to die like his mother was or the deer.

I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it for the first time, I still think it's a great movie, but I only have one problem with it, the Hypnotism, most people think that anyone can be hypnotized at any time, but that's not true, you have to be open to it, she wouldn't have been able to just say, "You are now in the sunken place." He would have needed to focus on something, and let her hypnotize him. If you don't want to be Hypnotized, there is no way that someone can hypnotize you, and if when you are hypnotized no one can make you do something you are not inclined to do, so if those people were hypnotized in real life, they wouldn't be working at this place if they didn't want to subconsciously. But that also works in with the brain surgery, so that they are less able to be themselves and snap out of the hypnosis. I still think this movie is great, and definitely has some amazing acting, Peele is amazing at what he does.

Edgar, it's good -- it's ambitious and full of promise, but to me it seems that there are extremely pertinent details that aren't explained... we can make up our own reasons for things of course, but given the aspects of Jordan's ability, vision & genius, the amount of work the audience has to do to get to one point to the other in certain scenes is laborious -- and no, we don't need our hands held to put a story together -- it can be done, but it takes the 'joy' out of watching... The "black is in" is a form of racism. It's thinking of a black person as an object, a fad, and wanting to be apart of that fad without understanding or respecting the culture they think is "cool". Those type of people will stereotype black people as being cool simply because they're black and automatically thinking they have talent in rap, athletics, dancing, etc. Peele wanted to show this form of racism in this movie. This is one of the rare cases where I would say the "satisfying" ending is superior to the "realistic" ending. Any audience after sitting through this entire film would be already on the edge of sanity by the time the last fight happens, and having the actual police show up and lock the main character up for the rest of his life would have put this movie on the same level as "The Road'" from a nihilistic standpoint. Can you imagine how hard that decision must have been to make for Peele? So anyone who watched the deleted scenes/alternate ending knows that the original cut ended exactly as I described, with Chris in court and being sentenced to jail for brutally murdering a while family. So put yourself in Jordan's shoes for a second. You have just finished directing a movie that you know is going to be powerful as hell, but also has to entertain the majority of the standard American movie going crowd. So the question is, do you choose the realistic ending where the audience's "hero" goes to jail on bullshit murder charges you know he wouldn't have a chance in hell of defending himself against, or do you risk stretching the audience's suspension of disbelief and go with the satisfying and slightly comedic ending where his TSA buddy finally shows up? Talk about a tough decision man... especially for your first feature film. You have my respect Jordan Peele, and I hope to have the opportunity to watch more of your work in the future!

While I agree, it doesnt change the fact that homeboy murdered that entire family and theres a mountain of evidence leading back to him. Unless TSA homie gets him to a non-extradition country by morning, he'll be in prison lol
@sh0cktim33 жыл бұрын
Would of been tough, but I think the realistic ending could help society in real life more. At least it could help good white ppl realize the bull shiz racism and stereotypes alot of black man experience. If that makes any sense.....

yes rick, tiger woods is also a very well known golfer however the old dude's tone was more like, I know tiger woods too presuming that all African American people know each other. It's that racist tribe mentality. He also seemed to follow the sport so there is the assumption that he knows more than one player. They were conveying covert racism in those scenes.
@ronninikaarlowe76743 жыл бұрын
thank you for addressing this very important point out about his commentary in that moment. I had the exact same thought and hoped the point could be made to Rick about the true underlying subtext of that line. Not to fault him, but just to have him understand and bring it to his attention.
@kyleellis91773 жыл бұрын
I get the point being made, but with golf Tiger Woods is the most famous player. It's like asking if someone knows who Michael Jordan is. The subtleness can be lost because it's tonal and off of background clues. By changing it to Harold Varner or Ted Rhodes it would have been presented slightly better. I knew who tiger woods was (a golfer) years before I knew he was black. Or go with a sport with more than a handful of famous people recognized by non watchers of it.
@austinbridges79283 жыл бұрын
@@kyleellis9177 yeah that line didn’t hit for me like the rest of them, because me as a white dude knows a ton of golfers but if I was asked in a spur of the moment decision to think of one it would still be Tiger and not because of his skin color ya know.

@@kyleellis9177but that's not what Peele is conveying my tone deaf friend. For us minority we got it immediately (see the brown guys reaction at 6:07 when the line is said) but some of you ironically white clearly have trouble digesting it whole and trying to do all this technical yapping about how it's delivered.
@TeaganPlate4 ай бұрын
@@austinbridges7928it's OK for you to personally pick Tiger and I get you may be coming to the defence of yourself since you said you'd say Tiger too. But for minorities side. Peele is conveying subtle racial social interactions of things we experience when talking to some white people as they try to do icebreakers to start conversations with minorities. We get yall have personal reasons but the reason in the film is NOT a good one, I mean he's literally there to potentially buy his body lmao and try to relate him by saying he knows someone that's his color thinking he's making him comfortable

I had the same question about the grandparents… like do they ever just chill with the family, or? Also: 1. Their insistence that Chris stop smoking was so he would make for a cleaner vessel. 2. Chris is an amateur photographer and had his camera on him, but he used his cellphone to snap a photo of Dre, because cellphones have been important to truth revealing of racism in recent years. 3. Chris is drawn to Jim - the blind guest at the party, because everyone else seems to be obsessed with his race. He assumes he can relax with Jim. However even though Jim isn’t racist, he’s “color blind” we come to see that being “unable to see color” doesn’t mean you’re not capable of aiding and abetting racism.
