Fellow freckled natural redhead here. The reason I was always given for why we freckle; we all have a layer of melanin under our skin. In most people, it's spread out in an even layer. In people with freckles it's kind of in clumps and spots. So when people with the even layer get out in the sun, their melanin colors evenly and gives them a tan. In freckled people, our clumps and spots of melanin color and lead to darker freckles and more freckles than we would usually have. Having said this, i'm not a dr. and I know nothing about medicine and/or biology. But this is what I was always told. 🤷‍♀️
