Hot off the news of Peter Do’s new appointment as creative director at Helmut Lang, today, we are at Endyma, the largest Helmut Lang archive in the world and an archive bigger than the brand’s own (no one tell Fast Retailing). We explore everything from the grails to the way that fashion design evolves in a single sleeve, trench coat or in this case, tank tops and so much more. This video goes far deeper than any magazine - this is a video that helps us study, in detail, the skill it took to create a body of work of this caliber and the people behind preserving and showcasing this collection of priceless garments.
Our full 160+ minute interview video is available now on the Patreon. Link below.
Special thanks to Michael Kardamakis and the Endyma crew - check them out if you are looking for a 'grail' piece, and borrowing garments for design research and academic purposes. SUCH a great resource for brands, and they’ve been used by the likes of Givenchy and other big fashion designers.

It would be lovely if Peter Do and his new Helmut Lang team would pay this amazing man a visit. Beautiful video, Bliss!

I once interviewed a very famous boutique shoe retailer here in Vienna and he told me the story about how Helmut Lang needed silver boots for his first or second show and they had none so they spray painted it. A lot of anecdotes are told here in Vienna about the early days 😊

I would love for these “designer archive collection” videos to become a series Bliss. I would die to see a video of someone’s Jean Paul Gaultier, Rick Owens, or Margiela collection.

Look up Rick owens collection there are 2 atm. One is a collection that a couple shares and the other is with a guy named bjorn van lanen who easily has the craziest Rick collection I have ever seen.

About 3 Months ago I had the amazing opportunity to experience Michaels Archive myself while staying in Berlin for a few days. I have to tell you it was one of the coolest experiences of my entire Life. This Team is doing a great job while being so humble and down to earth even after everything they have accomplished.

just a question: how did you become hip to the archive? what inspired you to reach out for an appointment?
@Alansarchive

@@aomeng342 I chatted with Michael a lot and asked him a lot of questions when I started getting into Helmut. A few months after that I visited Berlin and asked him what I should visit in the City. He was very kind and invited me to show me the Archive. So I didn‘t ask and would have never asked him because I knew I couldnt bring any value to the Archive. But he apparently recognized that I‘m very interested in what they are doing and somehow he seemed to appreciate that. Like I said they are super down to earth.

Wow, what an amazing collection. Taking us through the iterations of the "tank" was very inspiring and informative. I couldn't stop smiling the whole time I was watching this. I could listen to him talk about the clothes for hours. Thanks for sharing this with us Bliss!

Loved this bliss! Really making me consider that patreon! 😍 As a designer, there’s 2 main things you touched upon that we learn through our education and careers - iteration and inspecting others’ works. Tho you can’t really do iteration on the grand scale of typical architecture construction that I am used to, iteration mainly happens before a design is chosen and constructed. However, something smaller like the idea of what a tank top is and changing it up every season to explore that idea is very interesting. When we look at another designer’s works regardless of industry, we start to notice certain details and begin to think of why they made the moves they did. You start to have a dialogue with the designer even if they’re not there to explain the work. Those types of pieces I find more interesting since you’re having an artifact helping to carry a conversation without anyone speaking or being in the same room. Chefs kiss when those moments happen especially in cases for me like architecture pieces. You essentially become a detective.

I see Helmut lang’s influence in brands such as Dion Lee, Telfar and K.nglsey, particularly with his tank designs. I’m gonna give myself a pat on the back for recognizing the connection between the shirt at 21:00 and Raf Simons at Calvin Klein.
