As a ghostwriter who has worked for clueless clients and also did revision work due to fellow ghostwriters failing to meet client expectations, I have a lot of opinions about the state of writing. A large part of it is due to lack of education, a lack of respect for the classics, and a prideful attitude that refuses to budge because of "convictions" and "aesthetic." If you are in a writing room with a lot of "yes" people, nothing is challenged, and this creates more garbage, which then trains the consumer to accept garbage... and when something great comes along, no one recognizes it anymore.

Many of the talented people there quit because the job became hell or another company offered them a better deal or were culled after the Xbox merger. I'm sure there are still people left who do good work but the company is a shell of what it used to be and it will take a lot of changes to repair all the damage that's been done.

Some of that team actually works with GGG now and makes Path of Exile and PoE 2. If you love D2, you need to play PoE. All content is 100% free and the mechanics improve and the company works with the community to find out what they want. As far as I'm concerned, Path of Exile is the true successor to D2. Best ARPG I've ever played. Not even close. Give it a try, you might like it. If you don't pussy out because you saw a big skill tree lol "Oh no, I have all this freedom to make my build exactly how I want it! I don't think I'm gonna play." lol I'll never understand that mentality.

There are so many shows where the writers and actors have never done what they are writing about. Like shooting guns, cooking or even changing a tire or working on a car. Like having a car jacked up the wrong way and taking a tire off without jacking it up or tightening the lugs with it raised and then dropping the car and not finishing tightening the lugs, but the people are supposed to be experts. When I first read Tolkien as a little kid, I remember thinking "Every moment of this story carries the weight of Middle Earth history on its shoulders. Cohh's analogy to HBO's GoT is the big point here. Because the writing of GRRM ended around season 5. After that the showrunners (Douche & Douche) took over. Apparently these two couldn't write for anything but they still get paid tons of money. Even the women on the show were dumbstruck when they found out what the showrunners had intended for the last season, indicating that it would be a wet blanket on the entire series. People who are paying good money to produce and to consume this slop are the real victims here. That nepotistic crowd in Hollyweird and the gaming industry needs to be abandoned in the cold in order for these industries to survive. The Eru point is so the nail in the coffin. It is true, the prime evils can convince you to do bad things, maybe because you think you're doing good. But Eru flipped on a dime, a convincing story is Marius from Diablo 2 the Epilogue, he is completely tortured and ends up in an asylum. The video of him admitting failure to whom he thinks is Tyrael. "I learned later that he(Diablo) was defeated and the soul stones were destroyed. All except one . Oh I failed Tyrael. I couldn't do as you asked. I couldn't enter that Gate. Forgive me Tyrael." - Baal: "Marius, Give me the stone and all is forgiven." - marius: "TAKE IT TAKE IT TAKE IT, I'm glad it is finally over. I'm the same although probably played a bit less D2. While I kinda hated a lot about D3, I also did enjoy a lot too, and played hundreds of hours. I think I've played about 30 hours of D4 and then all it's issues became apparent. 30 hours for some games is great, for a Diablo game it's not. I think the only way to fix it for me is to completely change the game, which won't happen. There is no way I'm giving Blizzard even more money for a DLC so it's a good thing POE 2 is very close.

Diablo was always one of a kind in a very limited genre , hell Diablo spearheaded the genre up to Diablo 3 after D3 we had so many good Diablo-like games that the only thing that kept me going back to Diablo was the world, story and hero character designs. And all of those have become kinda diluted, homogenized and the quality has tanked. Especially on storytelling. D2 gave you the impression that the prime evils were actually powerful, highly manipulative and working in secrecy. D3 made sure the bosses would voicemail you everything they intended to do. Jay Wilson basically showed the Shark in all its fake glory (Re: Jaws and Spielberg about showing too much of the shark). That's why D3's story was as bad as it was. There was no mysterium in the mix. He also panned PvP, screwed up the merc system as well as itemization. D3 was awful and D4 isn't any better.

Storytelling in games is a side thing. If the mechanics suck, no one is going to play it. Unfortunately, D2 set a bar that blizzard is no longer able to reach. Mainly due to the fact that all the talent left and were replaced with corpo-sycophants.

@@catpanions D2 was surpassed by PoE1 as early as 2013. It released with flasks, maps, and the PoE skill tree and skill gem systems, all of which are superior to D2's equivalents. To pretend otherwise is the same absolutely mindless nostalgia and stockholm syndrome that Microsoft are now ruthlessly exploiting. I get that for a decade D2 was effectively the only good ARPG, but its time to take the rose-tinted goggles off.

@@Void_and_Colors To be fair, Undertale had some fun mechanics too. Boss fights were a blast. There's also a whole genre that survives mainly on story: Visual Novels, some of which don't have any gameplay mechanics to speak of.

As a Diablo enjoyer since the beginning of the franchise, it was a bigger let down for the story to suck in the expansion than it was for the game to be broken on release. The game can always be fixed, that story is canon now though. Good job Blizzard, way to suck at life yet again.

Blizzard changed it cuz its easier to change the effect than to explain to entitled community that something is not, in fact, difficult to see, but that they are in fact simply entitled and dont want to be observant anymore. Everythign regarding uber lilith you covered was easy to see and even better, obvious to realize that you need to avoid that red floating spell menacingly flying towards you. Even if we agree and say that "the effect was designed badly", that doesnt mean that the "game is designed badly" or that "the game is bad". Furthermore, if you insist that companies change and adjust things such as this because community cries a lot, thats prime road to getting exactly what you preach against: bad games and bad designs.

Your last point is spot on. There’s a saying in sports that relates to this, which is about the hard choices a coach has to make that says “when you start taking advice from the crowd… pretty soon you’re going to be sitting with them”. That’s not to say that fan feedback is all bad bc you need your fans to be happy but if people think what blizzard cooked up is ass, I guarantee what Reddit would’ve cooked up instead would be turbo-ass.

TBH the Story wasn't completely terrible.. what made it terrible is the ending. I damn near put my fist through my monitor when I realized I reached the end abruptly. I was expecting an entire hour more of game play and a end fight... It pissed me off so bad, You can tell there was a actual final fight but they cut it out to milk ANOTHER Mephisto expansion

This is an accurate description. The thing is people got spoiled with 10/10 games so even with diablo 4 being a 7/10 overall everyone seems to think it's trash. Could the story be better absolutely but there's not alot of Shakespeares/Sapkowskis/Tolkiens nowadays and that's the level of storytelling people expect from every single storyteller which objectively is a touch unfair to the writers/storytellers in current days. But hey people are allowed to have their opinions so is what it is.

I still think the Lilith & Inarius stories could've been so much better, but they killed off both characters *WAY* too soon. D2 and Warcraft 3 cut scenes are fine, but I still firmly believe the battle scene in Hell w/ Inarius vs. Lilith was incredible. The issue is with pacing, and Inarius' story could've been really interesting rather than taking him out so quickly. Also, where the heck are any of the Angels from the Angiris Council?

Because most of the time the churches are secretly controlled by demons masquerading as light followers. See the church of the Triune during the Sin War. Or the corruption of the Zakarum. And in case you didnt know, GGG is 100% owned by Tencent so you are giving money to the biggest gaming cashgrab company in the world. One would think that if GGG really stood by their words of "providing the best ARPG experience" for their gamers, the stash tabs wouldnt be locked behind a paywall that costs as much as D4, except PoE also has 500 dollar bundles. Funny how that works innit ? :D

It's pretty interesting how pushing one button to clear the screen is a measure of success with PoE whereas in Diablo 4 it's seen as a measured failure. It really goes to show how different GGG and Blizzard handle their development of an ARPG where the same outcome can be at opposite ends of each other.

I paid $70 for the game and now $30 for basically the same thing, that's what we expected, i guess.... I don't hate it, but I don't like the direction it is going either. The point is that people like to find something to blame. Diablo 4 is falling through the cracks; that's a fact. However, it's not as bad as they say. Diablo (especially 1 and 2) were never just about the story; i.e: Diablo (1 and 2) you grind for max level, do PvP with friends, and try to get or trade itens for the most powerful items and runes (which were EXTREMELY hard to get). The moment Diablo 4 incorporated many elements from Diablo 3, where the endgame was all about min-maxing your character with no further goals (just doing higher-level rifts in less time) and made easier to get the uber itens, it lost its essence. The way Diablo 4 launched (pre-season) was really good, but the community, fueled by KZbinrs and streamers, started to complain about everything. People wanted it to become Diablo 3, and... well, there it is: Diablo 3.2. And guess what? They're still complaining, now its because its more of the same, the story is bland, etc etc etc...

The lore/story itself isn't that great it's pretty simple, but it's extremely immersive. D4 truly lacks immersion, it doesn't have the dark and scary feel of D2.

i showed the boss fight indicators to a couple friends, they dont play diablo4 but they play terraria calamity and bullet hells and a bit of poe, and they all didnt know what was the attack indicator itself.

Pretty much everything good added to the game (apart from the new class) is free this season. The expansion is more of a cash grab, but they did add a ton of free updates that have improved the endgame drastically since launch. I would say it's worth playing while waiting for PoE 2, without giving them any more of your money.
