I have watched 13th. My best friend and I are so overwhelmed by the information. I want everyone to know that we, as white women, are pissed that we were taught by our "leaders" to question and fear blacks. I grew up in the 80's. When watching the turmoil surrounding race relations I had no clue it was perpetuated by the system. I was well aware of the divide, and thought black people were just mad about slavery. When in fact there is so much more to it. I, in spite of the climate, still chose to treat people around me with respect. I always felt like if the black people who I interacted with could see that I wasn't judging them, that I had empathy and kinda understood, they would do the same and eventually we could work our way out of hate. Well, I see we have a long road, but a much wanted mutual destination of love, acceptance and unity!!

I never really completely “got it” - I still don’t. I can’t... because I’m a white American. Like many of the other commenters, this choked me up. I’ve watched it multiple times now... How could I possibly understand the experience of being black and subjected to the subtle yet profound undertones and undercurrents of a society which hasn’t “gotten it” either. Like many others in American society, I’ve always thought of myself as progressive, tolerant, and accepting of all races and ethnicities. But there is that “privileged” hidden part of myself that questions why so many blacks live in poverty and end up in the “criminal justice” system - surely they need to be accountable for their own actions right?? I’ve condemned the looters and disagreed with the violence for defeating the “cause”. I admit it, but this video has opened up doors for me, and I thank Kimberly Jones for turning on a light in me and for providing me with a perspective I never had before I watched this.

Randall, so glad this is something that has touched you and made you maybe ask a few more questions. Howard Zinn's book "People's History of the United States" was my eye opener because it talks about the history of the oppressed (read brown skinned people) and how the powerful have kept them down forever. There are many books out there, Howard's was my eye opener, I hope you find one out of the many that furthers your education about this issue.

That is powerful. It helped me to understand why this is happening today. Although being a 65 year old white male I have come to acknowledge I can never fully understand what the black race has endured. I see we need to change, but sadly I’m not sure what the answers are. I will be honest...I knew there was racism but never recognized it for what it was. I never really understood. I never understood about what exactly happened for all these years. And it breaks my heart to hear the conversations moms have to have with their kids- especially their sons- just so they get home safely. I also realized it's not just our police system that needs to be rebuilt- it's literally everything. Our laws and opportunities were not created for "equality." That is evident- and must change. And this is why truthful American history needs to be taught in school. It would go a long way to helping black and white ppl understand each other. The problem is they only want to teach about the black leaders who preached Christianity and waiting on Jesus to save us. The leaders who want to take action and condemn white supremacy are either Assassinated, imprisoned or systemically demonized/criminalized. 50 years ago it was Malcom , Black Panthers, MLK .... Today its BLM.
@Copaceticbuddha3 жыл бұрын
So I’m 24 and while I was in school I was taught about the civil rights movement. Other students and myself were taught that the civil rights and MLK was the end of systematic racism and that everyone is equal now. They put it in our heads that this shit doesn’t exist anymore and I think one of the reason we’re seeing so many more riots and protests now is largely because of it. We have so many people in this country that just don’t understand why people are protesting, they struggle to understand BLM because they were indoctrinated to believe that all these problems had already been solved and this is so harmful to society. We need to listen to black voices because the reality we were taught is not the reality we live in.

@@jhozan Well first off, we've given POC actually race based advantages for ALL government contracting, grants, university admittance, and bank loans for ~3 solid generations now. The 20 Trillion dollars of LBJ's "War On Poverty" had as its focal point the black populations - so the country could have less racial strife (it didn't work). Also, it wasn't simply giant corporations that were burnt - many stores and franchises that were burnt were black owned. They've also destroyed any future prospects the city has for success as capital tends to flee if the environment isn't stable or risky. She blames television for people stealing televisions and computers, embarrassingly treating them like children. Actually look into the history of Tulsa, it's telling about how group identity can make a person dumb and ravenous - like this woman here. I'm Italian. Please read the entirety of what I say, it is an addition to what KLJ says. While I understand the sentiment, and agree with what KLJ says, she misses 4 important factors: 1. The white underclass as a demographic of America. They own nothing. Policies for betterment are usually focused on urban populations. The white underclasses reside mostly in rural areas. The poor underclasses are not a modern phenomenon; they existed during the period of chattel slavery. 2. The distinction between the white elite; established families, who benefit from the economic system, historically and presently, and the white working-class who have historically not been beneficiaries of a skewed economic model. 3. How does this apply to white immigrants? People who have no stake in the skewed economic model. 4. Historic minority groups other than African-Americans. Native Americans or Tejanos. What is their role in this? I feel this rhetoric collectively condemns white people, and that is a false premise. Economic competition, pressed upon us by an elite class, causes racial tension, as seen in the Draft Riots. It is in the poorest populations of society that you see the most racial cohesion. That being said, the disenfranchised underclasses are also used as a demographic weapon. It is a class conflict much more than a racial conflict. The racial nature was due to the influx of labour into the labour force, with the ability to drive wages down, and fears stoked by the elite. The corporate elites care not for the average white, black, or hispanic person. Collective working-class consciousness is undermined by racial division. Blame the newly freed blacks for race-to-the-bottom wages, not the fact that wages were bad enough prior to the emancipation of slaves - that is what people were led to believe. Working-class white and black have more in common than middle class and working-class people of the same race.

Now that is the truth. I have never been treated poorly by black people, and I have never treated anyone who treats me well, poorly. I live in the south and for the most part we all get along fine. Trevor Noah's contract quote Kimberley refers to: ""I saw so many people online saying, 'These riots are disgusting, this is not how a society should be run, you do not loot and you do not burn, this is not how our society is built!'. And that actually triggered something in me and I was like 'Man okay, society? What is society?'. And fundamentally when you boil it down, society is a contract we sign as human beings amongst each other. 'Amongst this group of us, we agree in common rules, common ideals, and common practices that are going to define us as a group.' That's what I think a society is, it's a contract. And as with most contracts: the contract is only as strong as the people abiding by it. But if you think of being a black person in America who is living in Minneapolis or Minnesota, or any place where you're not having a good time, ask yourself this question when you watch those people: What vested interest do they have in maintaining the contract? Like, why don't we all loot? Why doesn't everybody take? Because we've agreed on things. There are so many people who are starving out there, so many people who don't have. There are people who are destitute when the virus hit and when they don't have a second paycheck they are already broke. Which is insane but that's the reality. But still: think about how many people who don't have, the have-nots, say: 'You know what, I'm still gonna play by the rules even though I have nothing because I still wish for the society to work and exist'. And then some members of that society, namely Black American people, watch time and time again how the contract they have signed with society is not being honored by the society that has forced them to sign it with them. When you watch Ahmaud Arbery being shot and you hear that those men have been released and, were it not for the video and the outrage, those people would be living their lives, what part of the contract is that in society? When you see George Floyd on the ground and you see a man losing his life in a way that no person should ever have to lose their life, at the hands of someone who is supposed to enforce the law, what part of the contract is that? And a lot of people say, 'Well, what good does this do?' Yeah, but what good doesn't it do? That's the question people don't ask the other way 'round. 'What good does it do to loot target?', 'How does it help you to loot Target?'. Yeah but how does it help you to not loot Target? Answer that question! Because the only reason you didn't loot target before was because you were upholding society's contract. There is no contract if the law and people in power don't uphold their end of it."

This is one of the most based interviews I've ever seen. In a 7 minute statement, this lady just single-handedly obliterated almost every single aimless bootlicker talking point the conservative right has been throwing around for generations. She deserves a medal for this.

WRONG: not one of those business owners (targeted by arson, looting or vandalism) was operating on this self defeating nonsense. Not one business owner burnt down their own business or invited others to do so. Not one of them thought back to a hundred year old incident in Tulsa and said "I'd be better off if someone just burned my house of business to the ground". Not one. Some of the most idiotic s h i t I have ever heard.

The monopoly analogy best exaplains the income/economic divide in the country. If cheating happens for x amount of time, then a fraction of that time isn’t enough for solving the problem itself,

@Ash Hegde And why is she wrong? I know her rant was very angry. but you have to understand where people of color are coming from. I don't agree with all her points but I can understand why she and the Black folks are angry. Most white people, even liberals like my self have no real idea or grasp the full history of the people we now call, Black, Africa Americans, or people of color what they as a collective have experienced or the deep collective wounds and scars they have had to deal with and carry, and the oppression, profiling, stereotyping hasn't stopped.

@Ash Hegde You sound really angry. I am not sure where you get your information or statistics but my life experience has given me a different perspective. Of course people who work hard and smart prosper, all kinds of people. No one kind of human is taking over the country b ut there is a segment that has promulgated rumors that give a false picture of the demographics of the people you spoke of. No one is trying to replace white people. The White people have had the advantage all along and now that others are starting to prosper, some white folk are not happy. You can find the rich and the poor among all of us. Sometimes there is no rhyme or reason. I am white, was homeless, worked hard,, very hard and built a life and a career. It was not about my color but my ethic. Anyone who has a good work ethic can do well or at least ok but there are systematic kinds of oppression out there that are based in fear, ignorance, and just plain racist hate. I wish we could all get over this. Thank you for entering into the conversation. People of color is a umbrella term to include many aspects of our society that are nt typically caucasian or euro- centric in their ancestry. When the Irish and Italians came over they were scorned and oppressed by ethnic hate and disadvantage. It happens to many immigrants. Every one has something to contribute to the whole. No one group is taking over but there are some that keep that rumor and lie alive.

@Ash Hegde Why are we even her discussing this? We have had different sources and experiences. You are correct.I am a student of history and yes indeed many poor white people were indentured servants or feudal slaves in various times in history. They were oppressed by those in power, the royals, the holy roman empire and then the holy roman Catholic church or what ever emperor, ruler, king and war Lord was in power. . It is a very complex history with threads running everywhere. Bottom line, powerful greedy humans enslaved other humans. White were amongst the poorest of peoples during the great dust bowl, the great depression, in Appalachia. When oppressed white people. came to the "new world" they in turn started oppressing the native people's here for land, gold and other riches enslaving. Those which came first did so with a vengeance but they had just comes from Europe which was oppressing it own people and imposing the Inquisition murdering 1000s for their differentness or beliefs. It's about power, money, riches resources and land not skin color, not even religion or politics. can't you see?We all have been doing this to each other for 1000s of years. Hell, that's why they killed Jesus, because he tried through his teachings to upset the whole corrupt system of religious and political power, he was a threat to the status quo.. Why do we continue to press and hurt each other.? We are all humans, we have the same DNAs, blood and genetic origins no matter what we look like on the surface. It's time we started acting like enlightened beings instead haters and slavers. I found that you can proves any position if you concoct the right information, rumors lies, and images, even with the best intentions. I wish truly we'd stop all this crap and love our neighbors as ourselves regardless of their race, color, ethnic background, creed, politics or other surface differences. This is a beautiful planet and there is enough in reality to go around and for everyone to have a good life. Greed and power still rule unfortunately, politics, conspiracy theories and rich wealthy and corporations rule our world at present. I am glad you reminded me of the plight of many non- people of color as we are all in this together. We dream, we hope, we love and want the best for your children, family and friends but that good should never come at th expense of other people longing for the same. Thank you Blessings on your kith and kin.

@Ash Hegde I can see you are entrenched in your own narrative. I choose to hope for better. I could recommend a reading list too but it would be fruitless. This is where our society has come to - a stalemate of ideology and values. Many books to be read and studied. Many things are folly. Thank you for your time.
