When I was a young teen, when I’d be in the car with my parents, I’d act like was on a bike and did the gas, clutch and shifting. I knew I wanted a bike but never knew when I’d get one. I finally did when I got out of the Marines in ‘70, with the money I saved in Nam. It was a ‘51 Harley panhead. BUT…I didn’t have a bike license and most important, it was a jockey shift. So someone at the shop had to ride it to my house. When I finally fixed it the way I wanted it, I rode it and didn’t have any problems. A friend, who knew it was my fist time, said if he didn’t know better, he thought I’d been riding for years. I guess my backseat practice riding paid off. And at 73, I’m still riding a Harley Breakout.

Very good video. I've been riding for about 52 years and your information is spot on. Only one thing that I would add. When you first took off on the bike you mentioned to release the clutch and go. Most first time riders aren't going to be on a bike with enough torque to do that. You might want to mention that they need to ease out on the clutch as they give it some gas. This was the first skill that had to master. Good work Block.

I am so grateful for your videos. I hate shifting. I hate it. I went from a moped to a motorcycle and was happier and felt safer on a moped. I just had to focus on traffic/safety on a moped and it was a joyous commute to work each day. I'm a petite 59 year old woman 4 seasons in. This was so helpful. I hope to get the Honda Rebel with DCT as where I live traffic is heavy to/from work. You are the best teacher ever! I wanted to hire a 1:1 motorcycle coach. You would be spectacular at this 😊 I had to take MSF classes in 2 states and you teach slowly, logically and concisely. Just what I need as I panic shifting my manual on hill stops especially. I currently have a 2008 Suzuki Boukevard S40 due to my height and physical strength. I hope someday more low height automatic bikes are offered under 10k. The majority of cars sold are automatic. Bike manufacturers don't embrace this except for tall, expensive adventure bikes. 😢 Lots of female friends gave up after the MSF class and rode a bit then went back to sitting as a passenger 😢

You made me feel a little more comfortable getting into motorcycle. Shifting was one of the things I was confused about. I can’t wait to get a bike of my own and learn to ride
@sorayaimperial5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video! :) I'm from Europe, just starting my motorcycle license (A unrestricted, any cc bikes - we have 4 different A licenses for different cc and kw limits, I could jump to the highest because I'm over 25y.o. and have a car license) and I haven't had any practical classes yet, haven't even done my mechanic and theory exam. I have also never ridden any bike, so I wanted to learn shifting (which is what I'm most nervous about) in theory before I sat my butt on a bike, so that I can make the most out of my classes. One misconception that I had was that it wasn't sequencial! I thought it had actual positions (like push 2cm up for 2nd, 4cm up for 3rd, etc) and I was so confused about how precise I'd need to be to get the right gear on! This has made me WAY less nervous about riding a bike. I just have to say that in most US videos about using clutches, shifts and engine braking, it is so interesting and funny that using these can be so foreign to most people. We only drive manual cars here (automatic is a luxury), so to me, it is so obvious that downshifting leads to rev matching, hence, braking the bike/car. In most videos I see, this concept is explained as something new... because many many US people never drove manual shifts and may not know it. It is interesting how what is obvious for someone may not be obvious for the next person. Also, it's almost 4am here and my cat is staring at me while I train the clutch and throttle motions in the air like I'm some sort of lunatic. :D

Another great video! I think the zip-ties were an awesome idea and they'll help a lot of people. It's tough getting the action of the clutch lever in because your hand and the grips are blocking it in the first place, but I think it worked well. One thing I'd advise, is to make sure they have a firm, but not too firm grip on the bars. If they're new to riding and have a death grip, it's super easy to give more gas than expected. This will likely throw them back a bit, and can lead to a whiskey throttle situation. Ask me how I know. ;) I think it's also important for new riders (and those wanting to learn before taking the MSF class) to see that even experienced riders still have issues finding Neutral. I love the positive "clunk" HD transmissions give on a shift, but finding Neutral can be a PITA sometimes. Thanks for all you've done for the community!

@@Tahmanakki It is a Compulsory Basic Training we need to complete it before riding a 125cc or under on the road. If we want to ride anything bigger we have to then take a test which consists of a Theory and practical and is alot of money

Phenomenal video. Between the way in which you explain everything to the quality of the camera and your voice in general I feel confident I can now operate a bike correctly.

I'm a brand-new rider. Took the MSF course about a month ago. This video by far is the best explanation for shifting that I have come across on the net and in-person. Very well put together. Thank you. I'm going to send this to a couple friends who are wanting to get into riding.

You should make a video on gear. (Stuff you wear while riding)

Pretty sure it shows what he wears in the vid. Gloves Jeans and a t shirt 👌

Amazing videos Blockhead. I drive a manual transmission and am trying to learn the differences between a manual bike and car. Very helpful all around. You rock!

Just finished an MSF course--first time on a bike at all. Spent 10+ hours on a motorcycle, mainly holding the clutch in and sweating my ass off waiting for others to do their exercises. It was an unpleasant experience. This video taught me more than the class and was much more encouraging.

Well done. As added information: 1. Neutral being between 1st and 2nd insures that you don't accidently end up in neutral for any number of reasons. Maybe you need to slow down quickly or are coming up to a stop and just forgot which gear you were in. Without thinking about it you can pull in the clutch and tap the shifter down multiple times (4 or more on a 5 speed). You'll be in first gear and ready to launch rather than neutral and fumbling with the shifter trying to get underway again. 2. The contact patch of the rear tire on most motorcycles is small compared to the braking power of the engine. When slowing down and downshifting giving the throttle a short, quick twist (rev matching) when the clutch is in will better match the engine speed to the speed the back tire is rotating. This will smooth your deceleration and make it less likely that engine compression will cause the rear tire to lose traction.
