An interesting modern example of this old school middle era style is Gene Fullmer. Prior to doing his lead cross guard he often uses these exact same upward parrys. He also uses a fair amount of shifting footwork to come in punching and when retreating as well.

Loving this I was wondering if you could put up any sparring videos I'm interested in seeing how you go about it

The problem is, everyone I would spar with uses a modern style! I am working on that though and will be able to come up with something soon

So basically, when you take gloves away and use bare knuckles, like in a real fight, it becomes like Asian martial arts.

When you say super old school style what time frames do you mean and can you name anyone for me to look up?
@LieutJAM2 жыл бұрын
When block old old school style. Do you put your knuckles on your face when block, or do you just hover your knuckle to your face, or just open up your hand and grasp top of your hand and use the elbow and outer forearm to block?
@G_STYLIN2 жыл бұрын
So the lead hand is use to block and parry? And rear arm to put to sleep the opponent?
@PugilisticusBritannicus2 жыл бұрын
Both can be used to block and parry

@@PugilisticusBritannicus thx, what do you think about the centerline guard theory

@@G_STYLIN I don’t have any experience in JKD or Wing Chun, so I have never tried to apply CMA theory to English pugilism.

@@PugilisticusBritannicus why not use only the lead end to defense? Because the fact that the arm is in front of far away if easier to parry and block than using the rear arm that is in more far away to the opponent, i dont know if youre understand me

Are you basing your approach mainly on Mendoza? It looks very much like his stance
@PugilisticusBritannicus3 жыл бұрын
No, but I do personally prefer the old school low crouching attitude, which was also how Mendoza, Johnson and several other fighters of the middle era fought.

@@PugilisticusBritannicus thanks for clarifying! I train using 1880s-1900s focusing more on the John Sullivan era 1880s-1890s techniques. What I like about the middle era that you do is "strong dynamic entry"-ability to disrupt your opponent's balance by uprooting your opponent with the low stance during the initial clash.
