The diacritic accent mark is a fundamental part of the accentuation rules in Spanish (and one of the most complicated). The diacritic accent mark affects 8 monosyllables, 8 question and exclamation words, and the adverb for the Spanish word "aún" (yet/still). These are exceptions to the general rule which says that monosyllables should not be marked with accents graphically. It is impossible to master the spelling of Spanish language without thoroughly knowing the accentuation rules.
