Fun fact. Michael Shapiro who voiced Ishmael here was bouncing between recording lines for this game and another game you may have heard of in 98. Half Life. Yes. Ishmael was indeed the G man himself. I saw a documentary about the making of half life where he talked about recording both games at the same time and almost declined half life for blood but valve liked him so much they worked around his schedule. It's funny to me because he has voiced the Gman in every half life game including half life aylx. I can't imagine him with a different voice and we almost didn't get his take on him because of this game. I bet he's very thankful that valve worked with him to make it happen because it's probably his most well known role. He also voiced Barney too but I thought the Gman reference would be more shocking than Barney Calhoun.

The source code was released specifically to making modding the game as absurdly easy as possible because, lord almighty, Monolith knew it'd take that much to mod the game properly. The real shame though is not a lot of mods have come out taking advantage of Monolith being super apologetic in releasing Blood II in such an underbaked state. The few mods that have are terrific. Also, there's quite a bit of cut content in the code that can be restored and it's very doable to patch the woefully high number of bugs and incomplete parts of this game. So even without the engine source code, Blood II can definitely be modded into a much better and finished game. We just require modders with a stout heart to take on that ardous task though.

"and the only way to get them off is to spam the use key" - except that they forgot to add this for the release version, so if one did latch on you just had to wait till it killed you or load a save file. The release version also had a bug in one of the sewer levels that made it impossible to complete and, if you read the game manual, the ritual knife weapon was meant to level up with the number of people it had killed - which wasn't actually in the game. raw indeed.

I had one latch onto me, but it never did any actual damage, and I somehow couldn't get it off by slamming the use key over and over. So it just...sort of stayed latched onto my face obscuring my vision until I got sick of it and reloaded a save. This game was nowhere near finished.

It's just a bad timing. That 'ding' sound is played every time when your quest log is updated throughout the game. They just couldn't wait for the cutscene to end. So it is a regular sound which is used and has nothing to do with the portal.

Comparing the change in Civvie's vocal delivery from the OG Blood II vids to this remaster is really interesting. It's as if the OG vids were recited to me while I'm taking a morning dump I can just hear a muffled Civvie narrating the script with his face in the crack of the bathroom door. But I missed some of the punch lines bc I must have gotten some of my shit particles in my ear. I outstretch a hand covered in a Quake-esque color palette of ear feces to open the door. _bottom lip is hanging down n shit_ "wat u say cv??" And then, a mildly irritated Civvie raises his voice a few healthy decibels to say the entire monologue over again - a little aggro sounding, but with a fresh, bold enthusiasm - I _must_ understand the pain Blood II caused him. Plus I can hear every syllable clear as day and I'm here for it, so I recline back onto the toilet and enjoy.... yeah that's what the remaster is like

It actually more sad than anything, if you look at it as beta - it all actually makes sense, they all but finished the core mechanics, enemies ai and models, rough outline of cutscenes with some stub developer jokes, weapons, characters - all that was left the final tweaking, fixing some bugs here and there, maybe a few changes to the plot. Like you can see what they were going for, and it's actually a good game deep inside...

I love this game. Especially all the little nods. I was surprised you didn't put the crow nod when in the rat motel. They have tin tin with his knives in em. The NPC next to him even says "Halloween ain't till manya". Love it... Now you have to do the nightmares DLC

I'm probably one of the few persons who liked this game. Although the jankiness made me think the game was somewhat unfinished. I liked the weapon rooster of this game, lots of guns with alt fire and dual wielding. I think this game deserves a remake.

Blood2 looks like a reskin from "Shogo: Mobile Armor Division". Whether monolith engine is pretty limited or it was a lazy job

Oh, it was totally the latter. Both games were practically shoved out the door half-dressed and I'm pretty sure Blood 2 just took assets from Shogo so it could be called "finished".

IIRC, a bunch of the SHOGO code was used in Blood2, which isn't inherently bad since there's no reason to keep reinventing the wheel. However, I assume Monolith really just wanted to milk the cow as much as possible and effectively offload the development cost of SHOGO which they self-published.

Infoframes didn't so much become Atari as they bought the name Atari as an asset from the now bankrupt Atari so that they could rebrand themselves. Also I found the corporate Satanist approach refreshing, I don't know if anybody else that was doing this at the time in games.

Look on the bright side Civvie, we have a spiritual successor to Blood in the form of Forgive Me, Father. It’s just as dark, spooky and fun as Monolith’s gory masterpiece. As well as the right prerequisite of crimson plasma.
