I love the way this scene subtly reshapes the structure of the novel as a whole. McCarthy was amazing. When I look at the four of cups, I see a young man faced with several destinies in the three cups laid before him. He is unmotivated or hesitant to choose between them. Perhaps because he is apathetic, a fourth cup and a fourth destiny appears to him out of the ether. This destiny is handed to him and is chosen for him by an outside force. This image haunts the scene in which the kid and expriest are pursued by the judge and the idiot. Both the expriest and the judge pitch their vision for the kid’s future, but the kid doesn’t totally listen to either of them. He stays with Tobin, but he never takes the shot. Before then the expriest persistently reminds the kid of other possible destinies by pointing out the kid’s natural talent with repairs and his crack aim. In another life, he could have been an artist or a doctor. The tragedy of Blood Meridian is that the kid ends up gathered up by the brutal destiny he tried to escape. But the central question remains: did the kid wait too long? was there ever a possibility that he would choose a different path?

I'm pretty sure the kid as a man was a tough son of a bitch. The moral of the story is that the kid survived until the end. Bears that dance and bears that don't. Thanks so much for the content man. Whether or not this gets made into a film is irrelevant, grateful for this channel.

The illustrations on some of the tarot cards are eerily similar to certain events depicted in the book. The Devil and Judgment cards made my heart freeze.

4:25 yes! my favourite drawing of the kid is back. He looks like a scrawny video game streamer. He looks like the Zoomer to end all zoomers. I don't think anyone in glantons depraved gang of murderers looks like a Justin Bieberish teen idol

Just noticed the illustrations of The Chariot all include a blue veil with a celestial pattern. This shows up on the dessicated madonna the kid finds among the massacre of the calvary reenactment. The shape of the chariot itself is echoed by the big brass bed Glanton dies on. Also in the idiot’s cage, which emphasizes a parallel between the idiot and Glanton’s relationships to the judge.
