To those asking how to have the vignette apply only to the health and not the armor, its fairly simple, just don't connect the Create Damage Effect Widget to the False condition in the branch at 07:52 and it is only applied when the player health is taken away, not the armor.

although your tut's are great, relevant, and pretty easy to understand (VS just follow along and not understand); One thing I think I've learned - I wanted just a single animation to flash repeatedly, this setup causes a new instance to be repeatedly created and played over the top of the old one. Importantly, the old instance is not destroyed, so you just keep making new instances without removing handles or references to them - this is potentially a massive memory leak! I set my fire to tick every 0.01 with 0.02 damage per tick for a smoother animation - meaning that I was making hundreds of widgets, just with alpha at zero. I'm working on how to remove from parent/make only a single instance and replay that.

For those of you who have the updated version of the editor, if in the vignette fade animation creation the blood doesn't appear, do not worry. Change the alpha (RGB A) to 1 in the DETAILS and you will see the animation working

I'm having a problem with a newer version of UE4 where opacity is replaced with Alpha on the animation area. The Alpha with the animation versus the Alpha with the image default doesn't mix well and the image doesn't work at all

I had a similar issue, in the details panel leave the alpha as 1 and just change it from 0-1-0 like in the video. When you test it will stay invisible because the animation is keeping it a zero until it's acted upon. Everything else should be working fine then as of UE4.23

Gotta love how the Unreal devs just move vital options around and hide things with each update.. making these simple older tutorials 100x harder. For anyone who followed the tutorial correctly and still can't see the blood splatter, try increasing the delay in your pain volume. It might be taking too much damage before the animation has a chance to start. Good luck!

If you want to see the splash screen even when you recieve health damege, you must create your widget after the false branch node and the set armor node after the true branch at the same tame :D

If u have a proble at a moment when u make HUD showing on dmg to armor. I just copied the create dmg effect and add to viewport then connected it to the branche's false. It actually helped me.

I'm trying to rework this into a fading overlay that gets more visible as health gets lower, but when I try to follow your directions you showed in the health and armor widget tutorial for setting the overlay widget to a variable it says that it's not compatible with UI object reference? EDIT: Here's how I figured this out... I created a function called "Calculate Overall Opacity" that compares the current health value to the maximum health value (by dividing the current by the max) then I do 1 minus the created fraction. and return that value in the function. Then in the image I go to the brush settings in appearance where he showed we set the alpha value and create a binding at "color and opacity". In that function, I cast to the third person character (while setting the object to get player pawn) and then click and drag the "as third person" node to cast it to the function called "Calculate Overall Opacity". From there, I use the return value (the green node) and drag it out to create a box labelled "make color" and set that return value to the alpha. Then I take THAT return value, and drag it to the return node of the binding function I created at the color and opacity of the image.

By just copying the same idea with the health but instead of also connecting false to health and creating a new widget you can make a different HUD effect for shields and health. I made my shield effect lighting on my screen. Kinda cool.

So, you just created a massive memory leak, right? I'm completely new to UE but this looks so inefficient. Is it possible to use 1 damage function, let it take a variable in as "damage". Create the widget ONCE (better yet, put it in the HUD widget), and set the opacity of the blood effect to damage/10.0 or something - 5 damage sets alpha to 0.1, 10 to 0.2, 20 to 0.4 etc. Then in some tick event you drop the alpha by 0.01 if its over 0. Wouldn't that be more efficient and not spawn an immense amount of widgets (that need to be created) and never get destroyed?

it gets added to each of the Pain volume items you make. so essentially once you have completed one, you copy and paste, and then change the pain value to 0.10 for 10%, 0.15 for 15% and so on.

I had the same problem. I had only animated the Widget to .5 seconds. Follow the video very closely when he animates DamageFX with the vignette. He takes the opacity to 1 at .5 seconds, and back to 0 at 1 second. I forgot the second half and it didn't work.

Setting offset right, bottom 0 is maybe good. and need to 'remove from parent' node, because the created widgets remained. Or it would be nice to create widget in advance, only one widget would play 'fade' animation. so you can save resources. my bad english sorry

I'm really glad someone else pointed this out, because it's the first thing I thought of after watching. There are much better ways to achieve this without continuously creating new damage overlays. One way would be to create a single damage overlay widget, listen for player damage using UE4's built-in damage system, and then play the animation to show the overlay.

@@BerkinGG I think that this is what I ended up doing eventually because it made a lot more sense. The Take Damage function he made in the previous video is also weird. He made separate functions for taking damage in 5% increments when he could have just made one function, with the amount of damage to take as an input parameter, and could have cut the time of that video in half.

In your PainVolume event graph after delay instead of connecting it to "Take Damage" function add another branch with condition to check if the player is in volume(just like the one between "Take Damage" and "Delay") and then connect it to Take Damage function, hope you understood.

So you are creating an overlay texture every time you take damage, but what happens to that texture after the animation is destroyed? Shouldn't we somehow dispose this texture? As far as i understand there are multiple images left in your screen with opacity set to 0, which in Unity would kill performance... am i missing something here?

Somehow my timeline for the vignette fade animation started at -1,37 sec and endet at 1 sec but the keypoints were at 0, 0,25 and 1 so I have this delay in the animation... There is this like green and red clip which obviously shows the beginning and the end of the animation but I can't grab and move them, also tried to right click them and try everything that might work but nothing worked so I deleted the whole animation. Next try and now the animation is fine but still I'd like to know how to work with those clips/handles. Any solution?
