More of the music I grew up on. And took for granted. This is the music that shaped the psychology and sensibilities of my generation. Those horns are so clear, tight and strong it almost hurts to listen. There have always been great musicians in every generation but Wow! the abundance of stellar talent in the 60s and 70s, my youth, is phenonenal.

My favorite BS&T song is off their 1st Album from 1967. I Love You More Then You'll Ever Know. This one is sung by Al Kooper who also played the hammond b3 organ. He was pretty much the founder of the band, not the best singer but it's a great song. Al Kooper is another worm hole to check out.

I would listen to that trumpet solo on the B side over and over, what fantastic improvisation. David Clayton Thomas is vastly under-rated as a vocalist as well. Other great songs by them are Go Down Gamblin', Spinning Wheel, You Made Me So Very Happy, Got to Get You Into My Life.

The reprise was played here as well. On the "best of" compilation this was taken from, they just put the whole thing on it, instead of labeling it as two different songs. BTW, it actually goes a little longer on the fade than it was on the original album, so this is the best version to use on a channel such as this one.

BS&T fan since childhood. This song, Go Down Gamblin', and Hi De Ho are awesome tracks that nobody else has bothered to react to yet. I also appreciate your taking the time to make sure you found the right version. As a teen, I got BS&T's Greatest Hits from the Columbia Record Club for some ridiculously low price; however, I discovered that Columbia had a nasty habit of including truncated or radio-friendly versions of longer songs on their compilations. Thus, I missed out on a lot of instrumental gold from these guys, Santana, and many other bands until I finally heard their full versions.

Great! Another song I've been suggesting to reactors but have never heard til now. Thank you Graybeard, Nick and Lex. Also so glad the reprise was included in the compilation you used. It's the best trumpet solo I've ever heard. Plus that piano riff is fantastic and David Clayton Thomas shows off his vocal chops. This song was on the BS&T 3 album. It was one of the first five albums I bought when I was first getting into music--had it on eight track tape. I had loved the hits on the radio that they had out, but when I heard "Hi-De-Ho" I knew I had to hear more from them so bought the eight track. I saw them in concert a few years later at a small college I was attending. Good show, but the most memorable thing about it was the sousaphone solo. I forget the name of the musician, but a tuba solo was part of the act, only it was always a concert tuba--the guy had rummaged around backstage and found a sousaphone so he played the tuba solo on it. To this day, if you search for BS&T tuba solo you will only see a concert tuba, so I was blessed to see something not done elsewhere. So is it possible Lex bought a tuba? Now that would be a surprise.

This was the first record that I bought with my own money at 9 years old. I believe it was BST Greatest Hits. It is interesting and sad that the only instrument left in popular music from the jazz/big band days is saxophone. Trumpet is non-existent in popular music anymore, ( forget about trombone, clarinet, both were huge and quite common in the big band era) . Even in modern jazz trumpet led bands are rare. Chicago actually had an amazing trombone solo in their song Beginnings. Sorry guys, just some ramblings from an old guy.

I agree with you for the most part. But it's hard for potential musicians nowdays to do what was done back then. When we were kids you couldn't avoid hearing a lot of jazz and big band music. Kids now don't have that background, it's all metal, rap/hip hop, mostly guitar driven alternative, country or some other genre. But who knows, maybe some day it will come back around. You should check out Snarky Puppy--developed mostly by the music department at North Texas State University.

1. The name Lucretia got its bad reputation from Lucrezia Borgia - the public face of a mass-murdering aristocratic family. But maybe you were thinking of the song Lucretia My Reflection by the Sisters Of Mercy (and if you don't know it, it's an '80s rock-disco classic - especially the long version with the big guitar jam) 2. DCT and Halford were drawing influences from the same sources. You surely know those screams ultimately come from vintage gospel, blues and soul - and DCT's wail is a little bit puny compared to, say, the younger Ray Charles, or Little RIchard, or...well, "you ready for star time?!"
