There was once a player in my group that wanted to play a Malkavian but couldn't decide what insanity he should have. Eventually the Storyteller decided one for him: he could hear out-of-character conversations. All throughout the game he kept referring to the other characters by their players names, greatly annoying them. He also kept making references to his own character sheet, to the point of at one point producing an in-game character sheet for himself simply to prove to one of the other characters that he did, indeed, possess skills he claimed to have. It was actually pretty funny and led to certain gems, like: Tremere character: "The hell's a werewolf doing in this building?!" Malkavian: "Clearly the Storyteller's on his period." And after the prince once stated that we weren't very important in the grand scheme of things: Malkavian: "Says the NPC".

The explanation as to how the Malkavians can organize at all is that the Madness Network can be influenced by particularly old and powerful Malkavians, be they Methuselahs or the Antediluvian himself, and many young Malkavians aren't aware of this influence, so the Madness Network can effectively compel the clan as a whole to act on a subconscious level, although the individual Malkavian is still an independent entity and may not necessarily heed the call. As for the Great Prank? An explanation I'm fond of is that Dementation is actually just Domination, but the Malkavians' insanity changes how it functions, effectively creating a new Discipline. With that in mind, the Great Prank was effectively a blood curse placed upon the clan(something that can be done, especially if the clan is willing) that stifled their madness to such an extent that they could no longer impose it upon others, with the neat little side-effect of making the Malkavians far more lucid. Or maybe weakening Dementation was the side-effect... Either way, the curse worked well enough for the Malkavians to ingratiate themselves with the Camarilla, and in recent years the curse has began to wane, freeing the usage of Dementation to the Malkavians once again. And on the topic of the Malkavians surviving for so long, despite their apparent flaws? The Malkavians are quite gifted in the art of evasion: they're largely unpredictable, they can see through walls and read a situation extremely well with Auspex, they can know things they have no earthly business knowing courtesy of the Madness Network, they can drive their pursuers stark-raving mad with Dementation or simply tell them to go away with Dominate, and they can use Obfuscate to hide their presence and turn invisible. And it stands to reason that a Malkavian that is good enough to survive his first few nights can only get better at doing so as they become older, wiser, more powerful, and even more batshit insane. Although, one should always remember that a Malkavian isn't always a gibbering madman, as their derangements can manifest in any number of ways.

And BTW, You clearly don't get malkavians. They aren't always Fish Malks. You can have a Malkavian with one derangement. For example, Count Bubula was perfectly normal until he encountered Guine pigs. A malkavian devoted to logic to the point of obsession is also insane. The malkavians that collapse into gibbering madness have the option to gather more power. The ability to shatter the wall of sleep gives them the ability to readjust reality through perceptional adjustment. In many ways, the Malkavian is closer to the Mages/Willworkers then the Tremere.

Its not necessarily only confusion, the main character from A Beautiful Mind as well as Hannibal Lecter are both great Malkavians, same as Alistair Grout or DevNull. Add that to cryptic insights they sometimes stumble upon, which could be helpful or a way to manipulate them like a puppet, or both, they will never know. Its a clan that requires a bit of great writing/roleplaying to fully realize. Unfortunately they were stereotyped as an avenue for randomly disruptive players, in no small part due to their pre-VTM20 clan book reinforcing this. You can have all gradients between the wise seers and methodic Prince, but you should always fear when the mask of normalcy shatters, for should you be near them when this happens, then you shall see horrors the likes even the most depraved Kindred mind could never even dream of.

Old old character of mine was Malkavian. Had an obsession with counting. The stereotype of "throw a bag of beans at his feet and he'll stop to count them all". He started out as a sword-swinging vampire-muscle-for-hire. Turned his insanity into strength; he realized that counting didn't just come from counting individual items, but also distance. He would painstakingly measure the length of someone's limbs, the length of their stride, every conceivable speed at which they so much as blink or their blood pulses. With a healthy dose of Celerity and Auspex he could do that in tiny fractions of a second, after which... it was like fighting someone who knew EVERYTHING about you. He didn't 'block' or 'dodge', he leaned his head back just enough that the tip of your blade would end a millimitre from his flesh. He knew every move you could make (yes, he counted moves as well) and, thanks to his actual brains, calculated them in the same way a computer would calculate every conceivable move one could take in chess. When it came time to retire the character, I didn't want him to die to some nameless whelp newblood or self-insert Van-Helsing-wannabe Hunter. Instead, he spent two centuries in seclusion, during which he counted every star in the night sky and created an artifact, the Dome of Night. The Dome is a metallic sphere, barely twice the size of an apple, with a hole that you can fit a candle flame inside. All over the thin walls of the sphere are countless infinitessimally small holes (Celerity+Potence at 6 or 7 don't recall). When you light a candle inside, the light paints the entire night sky on the nearby walls, with one-hundred-percent accurate representation of how the night sky was on the day my character was turned. Toreadors have fought wars over this non-magical bauble, possibly out of hate-envy-love towards something that is beautiful, but NONE of them made.

Once, our coterie entered a casino, where my auspexy char immediately spotted a 3-story tall slotmachine in the middle of a room overlooked by higher floors - and it's working! So insert a 10-dollar bill, race up to the third story and throw myself onto the lever arm. Only I botched the athlethics roll, and impacted with a sickening crunch of broken ribs. Storyteller decides to roll 3d10 to see if I win something. First, he rolls a six. Then another six. And the last one... also comes up six. JACKPOT! Then, while people are trying to get me to a hospital despite me brushing myself down and saying I'm okay, one of the casino attendants helping collect the earnings for me whispers 'there is a big red button on the front of the machine you can use to spin it'. I laughed so hard at that i fell off my chair irl and rofl for a while. The utter absurdity of it all was just perfect!

He doesn't read manuals and treatises as the words, pictures, and illustrations come alive. Showing the complete and proper way to operate a particular machine or weapon system. Or the manual of arms for a long sword. Did I mention he has PTSD? He might see himself back on a battlefield in the past. What triggers this is unknown. He might flip out if a car backfires. Or he becomes lost in his memories while staring into the flames of a camp fire. Or in the middle of combat he goes completely beserk with an M60E6 machine gun. Then party realizes why he has been carrying a golf bag everywhere. But when he's not singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic. He's as normal as a vampire can get though he still enjoys a cold beer.

I don't know if its still an official part of the lore today, but in some of the old RPG books one of the Malkavians' biggest pranks was said to have been that they'd stolen the body of Jesus from his tomb. And in terms of problems with them existing as a clan - I think what a "clan" amounts to really varies from one to the next. I don't think the Malkavians have ever been really centralized as a clan a la the Ventrue. Unless they've re-written the lore since the earlier days, the Malkavians were almost always represented as loners. As a clan or bloodline they were accepted as part of the Camarilla again on more of an individual basis. Meaning there isn't (or wasn't) a supreme council of Malkavians that represented or spoke for the "clan" as a whole. It may be that they've changed all that and tried to re-write the Malkavians as a clan with an organized structure - and if so, then I totally agree with you that it wouldn't make sense at all. But the Malkavians as they used to be in the lore, "made sense" so to speak. Admittedly though, "made sense" *least* applies to the Malkavians, but you know what I mean. I never played the original Vamp Bloodlines game, but I am looking forward to trying to this one. I played the table-top game (both regular VTM and V:Dark Ages) for years and years and even did some live action vamp stuff for a bit, but I was never super into the LARPing like some folks, who tended to get a little too into it, in my opinion. Either way, its been really cool watching these clan lore videos - good stuff man, keep up the good work.

"Incorrect young one, you only think you were. You were once a treehouse, you lived in a cake, but you never saw the way oranged slayed the rake. You were already 3 years undead, but it told a tale, and now listen neonate to the safety rail. Now this is the key detail young childe of Malkav, Arch 's video is not chatting with you, even if it answers. I would know, it told me so" - Your typical Malkavian sire

I remember when if you played a malkavian in bloodlines, after you uttered your first phrase to Jack he would laugh and say "and you're a malkavian too" as in "WHEEZE you're FUCKED buddy"

You know what's funny? I've heard people talk about hating Fishmalks more than I've seen Fishmalks. Which tells me it isn't actually that big of a problem, people are just repeating something they've heard before and rolling with it. The irony of this with THIS channel is not lost on me.

I always thought of the Malkavians being on a Syd Barrett level of insanity during their first few years after being turned. They can write music, they can drag their ass into the recording booth and record "See Emily Play", they can concoct brilliant experimental music that's way ahead of it's time. However when the Pink Floyd is on it's first American tour, and Syd the Malkavian goes blank and won't even pretend to play his guitar because he's in a schizophrenic hole where it's just him and the voices in his head. About 20-100 years after turning, they become like the Tooth Fairy from Red Dragon. They're certifiably bat shit, but they have some level of control, over their sickness.

Also, I totally agree that they work in a singular fashion.

I recall a theory that the malkavians may not be as crazy as they appear, that much of it is an act. As for survival, they can essentially make others forget, they can warp their minds to be paranoid about others, etc, even "brain wash" victoms or destroy theirminds entirely... I do agree malkavians are written poorly as they are a fascinating clan.
