LoL! I'm giving mine away to a visiting nephew. He's an engineering student, so a decent model kit like this is the perfect thing!!!!!!! He can choose to paint it or not. As it happens I was planning to build it during the hols, but I did also bring my Traxxas Summit, my FTX Outback Geo, Ravine (Danchee Ridgerock) and Carisma Range Rover, all to play about with anyway. 😁👍

Before painting the second coat, spray a coat of clear on the tape to seal it so there's no bleeding through and give sharp edges.

Great video. To stop the paint from creeping under the tape, spray your first two or three coats very light and your final coat should be the wet coat.

I’ve just gotten mine & haven’t even opened the box yet I’ve already decided it’s definitely not going to be box art and probably just going with a single stage single color if I do add a clear it’ll likely be flat clear I just can’t see putting this much effort I intend to have fun and run it as intended (not hard but don’t want to be precious about it either) maybe I’ll pick up a spare body at a later date and put the time into it either way this was fun seeing what I’ve gotten myself into 🍺😎👍🏽

A common mistake made by a lot of Baja bodies vehicle owners, is that they sand off the line on the guards, thinking it some sort of seam line. This is incorrect. The line is meant to be there as this is where a VW Beetle's original guards were cut, and the Baja kit guards were fitted.
@brianworden70226 ай бұрын
Same idea with him deleting the gap between the front-end and bonnet.. panel gap is on a real Baja Bug.

Use Hycote plastic primer cheap and does a superb job, I paint 2/3 rc truck bodies a week and I still use this over professional spray gun applied products ! It’s available in white and grey as this base colour will seriously effect your finished colour ! Try spraying red over white and grey then observe the amazing difference in colour ! Use HB 496 aerosol lacquer for your finish, you will never use anything else again !! DON’T USE IT INDOORS !! IT CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR HEALTH.

Well done Gav, the body's turned out stunning. You need to be careful as to what clear you use if you're going to put it over the decals as it may make the print run unless you've had success with a clear you are familiar with.
@cmarshall45593 жыл бұрын
Use a base coat matte paint if you know you are going to lacquer. Much thinner. Less edge build up. Dries quicker. No ugly orange peel. Ts tamiya paint would have even been better. Etch prime just for first coat then switch to a surfacer.
@garymurphy51333 жыл бұрын
Gavs, i read that "etch" primer was no good on styrene/plastic. The etch effect only works on metal? It was the plastic "etch" stuff for bumbers that is needed. I think it was a case that the metal etch primer is just a better primer in general than others hence it works.

To get rid of the masking tape lines, use a heat gun set at about 180 degrees and be careful (don’t melt the shell) and the masking lines left in the paint will melt out. That’s what I had to do on mine.

I did a Joker one and I found that the Tamiya kinda plastic masking tape for doing bends to be very useful. For bonding always sand and then use Tamiya extra fine primer.

I used Tamiya putty for the joins. Can’t recommend as some chipped and fell out when sanding, so I ended up with some join lines still showing. But one thing I did different was to install the rear lights and putties their edges in as well.

Instead of using that etching prime for ur Gide coat. Put a coat of the grey primer. Then ur filler. Sand it till ur close. Then u can either us a red primer over the top of ur filler. But just spray a light dusting over the area that ur working that way u don’t sand the grey back down to the plastic. The red will show ur low points to add filler as needed. Or u can go to ur local auto parts store and buy the real Gide coat witch is black. It comes in a spray. Or in a can it’s like powder! And comes with a duster to apply it. I think u will find it better! And is a lot more user friendly!

My top tip: when you're masking round the kidneys on the bonnet, start next to the body post hole. If the paint bleeds, it will be covered/scratched off by the body clip so it won't matter.

If you are painting the outside of a plastic body like that all you want is a plastic primer than you spray one leave for a few mins then prime over the top of with your normal primer. I have never put an etch over plastic and would never try it.. The acid etch part of it will not make it bond to the plastic at all, most acids do nothing to plastic. If it hangs on at all it will be the solvent in the primer slightly melting the plastic... I have been panel beating and spray painting for almost 30 years so I have a little experience in this. The plastic that body is made of is the same as the mirrors on a lot of cars these days too btw. If you don't crash it, it may never come off but I wouldn't trust it. I hope it never comes off. Nice masking out too, you can't beat a good fine line tape!

You did a great comparison, but the last minute or two of your video was cut off.
@evelghostrider3 жыл бұрын
Etch primer should not be used as a cover all primer. Etch is supposed to be dusted on lightly, 1 dusted coat, etch has an acid base that eats into the surface you apply it to, and then attaching itself to the top coat. If you want a better primer and surface, first use grey scotch pads to scuff, then use a plastic primer. Again dust coats very light, I do around 10. Then apply the etch primer, then within one hour apply a top coat colour or base colour. For masking use low tack tape or fine line masking tape. Also use a heat gun to speed up drying. Once finished goto a good auto store that makes up paints, they should have a 2pk clear coat in an aerosol can 👍
