So I’m pretty sure this idea of expanded grids would be a disaster when another geomagnetic event occurs. A severe solar flare or coronal mass ejection would ionize the atmosphere and disperse charged particles through earths magnetic field. A severe event could damage electronic circuits. An expanded grid can worsen the effect by functioning as a conductor transmitting currents around the world overloading transformers. Since solar events are inevitable, it can’t be ignored, and the worst case scenario should be the operating assumption.
