On Feb. 9, 2021, a routine civil forfeiture case in Texas’ 394th Judicial District Court went awry. Judge Roy Ferguson logged onto Zoom to preside over his 11 am hearing and was greeted by two lawyers and an adorable kitten; attorney Rod Ponton who was using a computer with a filter added to his settings.
It’s been nearly a year since the pandemic closed courthouses and forced the judicial system to go virtual. While lawyers are getting better at remote hearings, hiccups like lawyer cat still occur. In this video, judges from across the country share advice lawyers need to know to ace their virtual court appearances.
