Do South Africans generally speak multiple languages? It seems like the cast members had an understanding of multiple languages. For example, Tumi could speak Zulu and Xhosa to Khaya; Tswana with her side of the family; she could understand Afrikaans when her “father” spoke to her. Dineo spoke Tswana and could understand her ex (Tumi’s “father”) when he spoke Pedi. I believe Xhosa and Zulu are mutually intelligible, but are the other languages also mutually intelligible or do South Africans just learn multiple languages? This is truly fascinating to me.
