Michelangelo Antonioni directs a swinging 60s inspired film about an unlikable photographer who witnesses a murder in the photographs he’s taken.
While initially quite a frustrating and perhaps tedious watch, Blow Up really shines once the film is over and its scenes start to linger with you. A theme that is echoed in the characters themselves as they find meaning in their art after they have finished. Perhaps indicating that this is how Antonioni himself films.

Thanks. Your channel has pushed me with a lot of these films from the point of "Oh I should watch this" to actually giving them a try. Nice work

The band playing were The Yardbirds, with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. In the audience is Michael Palin.

Loved the parallel you guys drew between the painting and Antonioni's vision. Looking forward to some more material !

I love this it’s like a lucid strange waking dream. All the surfaces and parallels with the subconscious fears and desires.

Hey guys, great review! Although I don't think it's Antonioni's strongest film (I'd say L'avventura is his masterpiece), I do believe Blow Up is his most memorable. Also, I would love to see a video on a Kieślowski film, perhaps The Double Life of Véronique? Or if you could get your hands on a copy, El Sur by Víctor Erice.

Thanks! L'avventura is definitely his stand out film. It's funny you should mention that, I'm currently editing a kieslowski special we filmed recently. We looked at all his narrative films and the dekalog. Keep an eye out for that!

A similar plot device 7 years later in this excellent film - an accidental discovery of crime by intensive processing of recording, this time sound rather than image. Different central character, different setting, but ... The Conversation (1974) PG | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Thriller A paranoid, secretive surveillance expert has a crisis of conscience when he suspects that the couple he is spying on will be murdered. Director: Francis Ford Coppola | Stars: Gene Hackman, John Cazale, Allen Garfield, Frederic Forrest

I'd like to hear what you think of the John Travolta follow-up "Blow Out." I saw it years ago and was struck by some of the parallels with the original. Perhaps not a bad film, either. Not sure if I will ever watch either again. Like you said, could be a chore. Did you notice that the pictures of the crime were in black and white? Kind of an interesting turnabout, presenting the audience with a color depiction of a story, then having a character in the story produce b&w photos.

It's about the image the taking, he's tired of shooting models... ask a photographer, you have it all wrong... bearded man is his book dal guy.

I'm guessing this is probably not a movie for those who grew up as kids playing video games and watching movies with a lot of CGI, and a million images bombarding you every minute. I'm at least a generation older than you both, and this movie was never a clock-watcher for me.

I watched it the other day and was thoroughly entertained. I had visions of David Cronenberg when he was decsending into the womb.
